How can there be so much discrepancy between RPI & ranking?

We have an RPI of 7 and are ranked 25th. Mich St is ranked #1, but their RPI is only 23! I am guessing our prior history negatively impacts our ranking, whereas RPI is truly based on just this year's games?

It's not just the polls that disagree with the RPI. Most of the college basketball computer rankings also differ significantly from the RPI. The RPI doesn't take into account a lot of things, most importantly margin of victory. If you beat a team by 20 points shouldn't you be rewarded more than if you beat them by 1? All the analytics say yes; however, the RPI doesn't do this.
The reason people focus on the RPI is because that is what the committee used for ages in comparing teams. Now, I think they rely just as heavily on KenPom's ratings and others. For example, we are currently 15th in KenPom's ratings. That seems more or less correct to me.
