ACC should realign.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:23 PM

Take all teams north of North Carolina and put them in one division called ACC NORTH and all teams south of North Carolina and call them ACC SOUTH then just split the 4 NC schools and we now have 2 divisions that make more since.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:25 PM

Note: Louisville is more west but put them in the South as well. Then it will even out. Either that or put them in the North and have only one NC school in the South.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:28 PM

trash in the other? Sounds dumb. How about splitting based on skill/program level every four years.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It doesn't bother me

Dec 4, 2014, 2:33 PM

To be in a tough league. But it make more since from a travel point of view. Besides things will likely change as to whom is a power and who is not. Right now as it is the Atlantic Div has all the good teams anyway (except GT and we play them every year anyway)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nobody would get of the South undefeated

Dec 4, 2014, 4:32 PM

That'd be a tall order for a "normal" year when more of the traditional powers are doing at least OK.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

cough, SEC, cough, cough

Should scrap divisions

Dec 4, 2014, 2:32 PM

And go to a rotating schedule through the entire conference. Give everyone 1 rivalry game, and rotate through the rest. Makes no sense to play NC State and Wake every year but hardly play UVa and Duke.

Top two teams play for championship.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just swap VT for Syracuse and it's a true zipper model

Dec 4, 2014, 2:49 PM

all major rivals are cross division permanent games and it makes the atlantic awesome. GT/Miami would rule the coastal, unless duke continues their upward trajectory. cutcliffe is a good coach, IMO.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:51 PM

If they did that it would look just like the SEC. North=East and South=West

Re: ACC should realign.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:53 PM

It would make more sense it we had expanded the ACC with power football schools instead of the last two jokes we took in.

Re: ACC should realign.

Dec 4, 2014, 2:58 PM

We don't need to be in the same division as FSU, it's that simple. Since we seem to be the two major players with a firm commitment to football programs. It's anti climatic to play them the 3rd weekend of the season and whoever loses, their season is almost always going to be damaged. Until the other schools make that same commitment to developing their programs, it's not fair for the two best teams to cut each other up year in and year out. Just my thoughts.

Re: ACC should realign.

Dec 4, 2014, 3:05 PM

When they started forming the divisions, programs like Miami and VA Tech were major programs. Nobody knew that those teams would fall off like they did.

If those two schools still played like they did in the 2000s, the coastal would be the dominant side.

You can't realign.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ultimately don't you think the Golden Domers come in?

Dec 4, 2014, 3:29 PM

Bring one more with them and go to 4 PODS; 4 teams each...
Play 3 others in your POD; One perm and one rotating from each of the other PODS - nine games.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How about just going back to a 8 team league.

Dec 4, 2014, 3:31 PM

Stop all of this foolishness!!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: How about just going back to a 8 team league.

Dec 4, 2014, 3:36 PM

And resurrect the Big 8 and SWAC as well

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How about this for realignment?....

Dec 4, 2014, 4:07 PM

Old School (Original ACC)

Duke
GT
UNC
NCSU
Wake
UVA
Clemson

New School

BC
FSU
Miami
Louisville
Pittsburgh
Syracuse
Va. Tech

Given the current state of things....it's not a bad split. New school division could get tough in a hurry and is probably the deeper one, but currently this kind of works.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Looks like Old ACC and Old Big East (with some exceptions)***

Dec 4, 2014, 4:44 PM

The current divisional alignment resemble two different conferences who's champions meet in Charlotte for the ACC-CG.

Here is an idea for a better ACC.

Divide into 3 groups of natural rivalries. You play an annual game against everyone in your group yearly. You play everyone else in the ACC every other year.

Group 1:
UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke

Group 2:
Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech

Group 3A:
Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville

Group 3B:
FSU, Miami, Pitt

Atlantic Division in even years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc). Cross Divisional games shown in parenthesis.

UNC (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
NCST (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Wake (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Duke (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Clemson (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
Georgia Tech (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
L-Ville (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)

Coastal Division in even years (2016, 2018, 2020, etc). Cross Divisional games shown in parenthesis.

Syracuse (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
BC (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
UVA (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
VA Tech (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
FSU (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Miami (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Pitt (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)

Atlantic Division in odd years (2017, 2019, 2021, etc).

UNC (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
NCST (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Wake (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
Duke (play 2 Syracuse, BC, UVA, VA Tech)
FSU (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Miami (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)
Pitt (play 2 Clemson, Georgia Tech, L-Ville)

Coastal Division in odd years (2017, 2017, 2021, etc).

Syracuse (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
BC (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
UVA (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
VA Tech (play 2 UNC, NCST, Wake, Duke)
Clemson (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
Georgia Tech (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)
L-Ville (play 2 FSU, Miami, Pitt)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So how do you determine who plays in the championship game?***

If we realigned like this, and Notre Dame didn't join...

Dec 4, 2014, 5:02 PM

...then forget it...they will never join:

NORTH---------------SOUTH
VT------------------Miami
UVA-----------------UNC
Pitt----------------NCSU
Syracuse------------Duke
Louisville----------FSU
BC------------------Clemson
Navy----------------Wake
Notre Dame----------Georgia Tech

Go to a nine game schedule so that you play your division each once, a permanent rival and one rotating cross-divisional opponent. Schedule all the rotating cross-divisional games for the same weekend and make an "event" out of it (call it the Civil War or some other such thing that gets some regional excitement in it). Make the division that wins the automatic home team for the ACCCG in Charlotte.

Obviously this cuts down on travel costs and heightens regional fan rivalries. It also gives Notre Dame a dream set-up. They play their historical opponents of Navy, BC and GT every year, and they can still schedule their Southern Cal game. Keeps them playing in the Northeast, which is where their alumni base lives.

I'm not saying we do this solely to get Notre Dame to join. I'm saying that if we did this, and Notre Dame STILL passed on joining, we kick them out fully. They will never join...and football is the ONLY reason to have them in the conference.
