Strength of schedule
Nov 24, 2015, 12:25 PM
|
|
Wins over teams currently in top 10: Clemson 1 Alabama 0 Wins over teams currently in top 20: Clemson 1 Alabama 0 Wins over teams currently 21-25: Clemson 0 Alabama 1
Hmmm.
Bama has one freaking win against a team currently ranked. One!

Clemson is also the only team with 2 wins over top 16 teams.

Not to argue that Bama should be above Clemson...

But their schedule is tougher overall, due to its depth. They only have one win against a "ranked" team, but they have a slew of wins against teams "not quite ranked". If you extend to the "receiving votes" category, they have beaten #'s 28, 29, 30, 33, 35, and 37. The only team in that group Clemson has played is Pitt (#27).
If they win Saturday and in the SECCG, they will have beaten 10 bowl teams. Clemson, by doing the same, will have beaten 7.

Good point! But you could argue that playing more very high rated teams is a tougher schedule then playing more above average teams. You might not be getting tested every week but your tests are much much tougher. Depends on how you want to look at it...

Home/road a factor, too...

Both of Clemson's big wins were at home. Bama has one win away from home against a "ranked" team, and three such wins against "receiving votes" teams.

I'm sure you are aware that because of the pre-season polls that the entire SEC is in the top 35 with 2/3rd's in the top 25. Why? I don't know. But after the ass-kicking in last year bowl games, you wouldn't think they would have been. Stupid voters! The SEC definitely gets

Yes, this is how I see it too. When determining something

as tough as "Who should be #1 vs #2", the bigger differentiation is "who beat top quality opponents?". There is something to be said for staying focused enough to beat a schedule full of top 40 opponents, but ultimately I'd always give the edge to the team that stepped up to beat two top 15 teams over the one that stepped up to beat all but one team ranked 20-40.
So, it's a good argument to have: Wins against premier teams vs consistent wins against "good" competition...IF both teams were undefeated. But they aren't.

Sure, i won't argue their SOS is better but they also dropped a game. Does that not matter? It sure seems llke they get a mulligan. If we had dropped any of our games would we be sitting anywhere near #1? Heck no.

So the definition of "gauntlet" which is what Alabamas schedule is referred to has now shifted from playing a bunch of top teams to a bunch of mediocre teams....
