Birmingham is my home town. It has a pretty underrated beer scene. As others have said, Trim Tab is probably the best all around brewery here. Good People's snake handler and bearded lady are both very good, and the atmosphere at Good People is much better than TrimTab. Back 40's food is fantastic. The atmosphere at Avondale Brewing is a lot of fun as it is mostly outdoors.
If you want a beer bar, Hop City has the best selection around.
Enjoy! I'm biased but I like Birmingham a lot.
