Weakside LB - JD Davis

May 14, 2016, 4:15 PM

I see JD listed behind Bouleware on the post spring depth chart.

I hope he plays well this year. If he's #2, looks like he'll get some meaningful snaps.

There was a ton of negativity behind the recruitment of those twins on this board before they ever took a snap. Seemed a little ridiculous at the time and hopefully by mid season all of you rolling around with your little black clouds of doubt and anger will get a full cup of shut the h$$l up.

Re: Weakside LB - JD Davis

I do not mean to rain on the Kumbaya Parade, but I would be...surprised if JD Davis gets much more than 100 snaps this year, and most of it will likely be ST.

One of the requirements of a weakside LB is that they have to be able to run with backs in coverage. It's the biggest weak point in Boulware's game; he is absolutely lightning compared to either of the Davis boys. And Jalen Williams - who got moved to strongside 'backer - makes the Davis boys look like their feet are dipped in cement.

It's kind of an interesting move. Jalen Williams is undersized, and does seem more like a strongside guy in Clemson's scheme than a weakside 'bakcer, but the strongside backer comes off when Clemson goes nickel. And since Dorian O'Daniel is looking dominant and our safeties are looking thin, thin, thin right now, it strongly implies Clemson is going to be playing a lot more base 4-3 than we were last year, when we were predominantly nickel. Then again, last year was kind of the opposite - we were loaded at safety, very thin at LB.

Whatever, the weakside 'backer is going to be on the field in either formation. He's very much a focal point of a Brent Venables D. And anybody who thinks either of the Davis boys are even in Jalen Williams' league needs to watch a practice or two. It isn't close. The Davis boys are decent run stuffers. That's it. That's all they can do. They just do not have the athleticism to run in coverage, and their range is severely limited.

And yet there's that depth chart right now, and Jalen Williams - who has crazy closing speed and tremendous range even if he is undersized - has been moved to SLB. With apologies to JD Davis, what that strongly implies is he's keeping that spot warm behind Boulware for...someone else. Shaq Smith possibly, Chad Smith more likely, who isn't listed on the depth chart at all. Knowing the tough-love approach Venables uses, my guess would be he's putting pressure on Chad Smith to clean things up somewhere. Or maybe he expects a big leap from Shaq Smith in fall camp.

Whatever, one of the Smith boys is almost certainly going to be holding down the #2 WLB spot come the end of fall camp.

It almost certainly will not be JD Davis, whatever. No hate for the guy; he's just too physically limited to hold it down. Keep in mind Shaq Smith was a 5-star. Chad Smith was a 6.0-rated 4-star, almost a 5. Those were 30+ offer guys who could have written their ticket to anywhere, and for good reason. The Davis brothers had zero other FBS offers.

Sorry, they just almost certainly aren't going to beat those guys out, not over the long term. They just aren't.

Thank you. There are valid reasons on both sides because there was a lot of hate, but the Davis twins are not takes at any other championship-level college football program. Maybe you could bring one in, or perhaps both as preferred walk ons, but I trust Dabo to make corrections down the road if/when he deems it was detrimental to the overall team success from a roster management/depth (read special teams) perspective.

The fact that there are two of them combined with a few other questionable or borderline nepotistic takes just made some people go overboard. I wish all those guys the best because they are Tigers and I'll leave it at that.

all of our players aren't 4 and 5 star recruits...

May 16, 2016, 8:14 AM

If the Davis brothers weren't on the team it would be another two players that were 2 star recruits like them. Let's not forget Renfrow was a walk on. Hating a Clemson legend's sons is the ultimate betrayal to Clemson. All colleges take players that were sons of legendary players, even when they aren't highly rated. The team has 85 scholarships and walk ons which comes to over 100 players on the team. Making a big deal out of two players out of a hundred is just moronic. This team is loaded with talent and has been able to find gems that weren't highly rated coming out of high school

Re: all of our players aren't 4 and 5 star recruits...

May 16, 2016, 2:54 PM

No one said they had to all be 4 or 5 stars because no school does that. No one is hating on lower-ranked guys either and we all know about Renfrow and Beasley and Gaines Adams and the like.

Did Clemson special teams affect a chance at hoisting the CFP trophy earlier this year? If you answer yes then that is the reason some make a big deal out of "two players out of a hundred". Look at depth at LB last year and how many snaps Ben and B.J. played. Look at cornerback depth this year and be thankful we pulled in a guy like Mullen at the last minute.

Clemson football isn't immune to criticism because the team has been successful; that's kind of the point of message boards.

By the way, thanks for driving home the nepotism angle with your comment on Clemson legacies.

So the Davis twins are the reason for poor special teams?

May 16, 2016, 6:26 PM

Post video of them being the only ones on special teams who didn't play good. Yes special teams were a problem, but that was due to poor coaching on that aspect. The biggest problem with special teams was the kick off return coverage, and that was due to awkward alignment which leaves half the field open for a returner to cut back and have a lot of running room. The Davis twins weren't the ones who decided to go with that alignment. Like I said before, if they weren't on the team, it would be two similar players taking their spots up it wouldn't be 4 or 5 star players. We didn't stop recruiting any highly rated players to take them.

By the way thanks for hating on a Clemson Legend and his sons. Hopefully you will be able to meet Jeff Davis and his sons so you can tell them they don't belong on the team.

rule books that plays right into the Davis brothers sweet spot.

LB Twin Formation Exemption (Rule 2-16-10) FR-35
Change to paragraph a: (New language is included below)
“Although defenses are only allowed a maximum of 11 players on the field at once, clones, twins, or mutated embryonic individuals (i.e. other mutants) are allowed an exemption in an effort to respect their genetic identity. Clones, twins, and mutants may line up as the 12th man alongside their genetic counterparts as long as offenses cannot visually distinguish between the two individuals. This exemption does not apply to fraternal twins."

Spring depth chart is somewhat meaningless but more of a motivating tool and to also keep some from transferring. They always list players that will not be in the top 3 come fall. Do not want to lose special team players to transfer.
