Has anybody ever met, or know a living “Clemson” ?

Jul 26, 2019, 11:40 AM

What I’m asking is did all the actual Clemson’s pass away?, or did that family last name die out. I know we have the university and our university family, but does anyone know anybody now with that last name in today’s present time ?

I think he works for State Farm ...

I ran into a "Clemson" while in the military. Although I question his heritage, as he was from PA and could not care less about football. Seemed like an imposter to me.

To clarify, only the "imposter" part was a bit. I actually did know a Clemson from Pennsylvania that did not follow football. He did not know of any family ties to the university or town (nor did he know of Thomas G. Clemson), but seemed interested once enlightened.

...or he could have been just giving me the "smile and nod" treatment while hoping that the annoying officer talking his ear off about his alma mater would just leave already.

Also, I had a commander once with the last name of "Collins" tell me that he was related to T.G. Clemson, but I'm not sure about that one. The facts that he knew sounded remarkably like one-liners from Wikipedia, or a bad trivia game.

I remember a few years ago

Jul 26, 2019, 11:54 AM [ in reply to Re: Has anybody ever met, or know a living “Clemson” ? ]

When a family from Pennsylvania visited Clemson who claimed to be related to Thomas Green Clemson.

Yep - when I went to the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania - not far away was a restaurant run by a Clemson family. Tom Green was from Pennsylvania.

Thomas Green Clemson was actually born in Philadelphia, so there could have been some kind of connection that he didn't know about.

to change their name to "Clemson University" in 1964, they had to get permission from the closest surviving cousin who was in Minnesota at the time, I believe.

Does this count?

Jul 26, 2019, 11:56 AM

My son is a 1st cousin 8x removed of John C. Calhoun and a current student at Clemson. Does that count?!?!

Yes' one of the daughters of John C Calhoun married
Thomas G. Clemson. BTW, Katherine Dennison on Southern
Charm is a descendant of Calhoun. She had babies by
Thomas Ravenel.

All four children of Thomas G. Clemson died at a young age but
since he was from PA. maybe his brothers carried on
the name.

Correct that there are no living male descendants of TCG

Jul 26, 2019, 12:16 PM

His only son, John Calhoun Clemson, died at age 30, unmarried

I believe Thomas Green Clemson had two brothers, so there are potential male descendants of them. TGC and his brothers were all born in Pennsylvania.

Not sure if any of those Clemson's are still around. I asked about the relationship, if any, when I was there but no one really knew.

I'm sure there are some very distant relatives out there somewhere.

Don't know a Clemson, but did see a Clemson Island on the Susquehanna River North of Harrisburg PA. while traveling to my son's house in NY. I assume that is named after the same family.

I am the Clemson Surname Administrator at FTDNA. I am still waiting for the first Clemson to test his YDNA.

According to this site on the 2010 census their were 584 people in US with the last name Clemson. Thomas Green Clemson was from PA and I believe that is where the majority of people named Clemson live.
https://projects.newsday.com/databases/long-island/census-last-names/?where=name^Clemson&offset=0

Also my grandfather served in WW2 on a Clemson Class Destroyer.
