The signing bonus.

After that, the rest comes in installments, usually back-loaded, and usually you have to be on the team past a given date - usually June 1, if memory serves - before your "cap number" kicks in and the team takes the cap hit for your salary regardless of what you do for them in the ensuing year.

In practical terms, it means a lot of players get cut before June 1 or whenever that cut-off date happens to be.

At which point the team usually owes you nothing.

Crazy way to live.
