Goal post tear down - 1998

Anyone remember the year we tore the goal post down in 1998? I was one of the many that helped carry that thing down town and ultimately into the pond in front of the library. Even though the team finished 3-8, we were able to beat the cluckers. It was an awesome time. Anyone remember that?

Always thought that drop-off was Lake Hartwell.

I looked at it as threw him out of the stadium. I was not sorry he went. Terrible hire. Appeasement attempt

Exactly. A feeble attempt to rectify an agregious mistake for no other reason than to try and recoup lost revenue. Bobby Robinson = Clemson Football program killer (at that time anyway). Thankfully, the Tigers have recovered nicely...

Freshman year. We celebrated what we could. We lost sight of it downtown, and then the next day saw it had been dropped in the reflection pond. OT: The reflection pond was one of my favorite holes for midnight campus Frisbee golf.

That was my freshman year. I remember it well. And yes, it definitely ended up in the reflection pond in front of the library.

got it out and cut it up in pieces for souvenirs. I remember thinking the aluminum was a lot thinner at the end than I thought it would be.
Never got a piece for myself. Always regretted I didn't.

At least one of the goalpost removals was while I was there in the 02-05 range. It also ended up in front of the library, cut with hacksaws into small pieces to be taken home as trophies. This was after the USC game as well.

So YOU GUYS are why we have those stupid fold down posts?

Well, I guess it was good for the economy.
Some company made a few hundred thousand for building and installing them and Clemson hired a couple of dozen guys to stand around them with arms folded while the crowd ran onto the field every game for the next 20 years.
But, then Mike Williams broke his neck on the stupid things, so ...

Part of it made it's way into Mauldin Hall where I was living at the time. My roommate was telling me about it the next day and saying how he couldn't figure out what it was. I don't know if that was because he was from Uzbekistan or because he was stoned.

were civil. The coots were actually tolerable. I think we all wanted West to succeed, but anybody would have had a difficult time succeeding in that time period. Our administration was not really committed to winning. In all honesty, they still weren’t committed when we hired Dabo, we just got real Dang lucky.
