Georgia Dad-Gum Tech

Aug 17, 2012, 10:25 AM

Maybe some of you more knowledgable Clemson fans can enlighten me as to why Clemson has played at GT, 58 times, through the years, and only 16 times at Clemson? No wonder their sorry butts have a relatively one sided lead in the series! Don't like em!!!!

During the Frank Howard days we played in Atlanta every year for the payout we received for playing at Grant Field. Back then IPTAY was nothing like it is today, and the program needed the money.

Right, also why we played so many games at Alabama and Auburn. We were their "cupcake" game. Home crowd was huge at Clemson then if over 30,000. Also, GaTech was still in the SEC

Speaking at the Anderson TD Club

several years ago, Bobby Dodd said much the same thing. He said he was willing to give Clemson 250,000.00 to come to Atlanta. They brought a great crowd and played a good game. He also said he was not about to come here and take a chance on getting whipped.

Same reason Auburn always played at Bama until the 80s

GT & Bama used to be the top southern football powers.

They could afford to pay off other teams to play at their stadium.

2000 was the first Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa since 1901

Auburn didn't play at Alabama until the 80s. They played in Birmingham, the closest thing to a neutral site for each, from 1904 until 1988. Then they alternated between Birmingham and Auburn until 2000. Then they started alternating home fields.
