I am still going to vote for Trump because I voted for him in 2016 for his business skills, and those are still intact. Don't care how he treats snowflakes just how he runs the economy. Probably to late now but I wish he could SHUT UP. Handing the reins to the Dems on a silver platter.

The difference is, I want the party of Reagan back. Revisionists may try to confuse the issue, but Reagan was a great president - and the reason why was simple: he stood up to the bad guys - the Soviets were terrified of him, they thought he was a cowboy and a madman, the official KGB assessment, no lie - and he worked across the aisle to build consensus. He actually had a whole bloc of Dems - known as "Bol Weevils" walking across the aisle to vote with him.

And he got stuff done by actually leading, and didn't spend 99% of his time antagonizing the other side to try to mask his own failures.

We want that back, we have to be willing to vote for Biden...and see where we are in 2024. Otherwise why is the Party of Trump - which has absolutely nothing to do with the Republican Party most of us grew up in - ever going to remember its actual ideology again?

When the GOP went Trumpist, I bailed. You want an actual GOP again, you've gotta be able to tell it No Way. There's no other means of voicing one's displeasure in this two-party monstrosity we have going here in the USA.

(Mind, you want a better way, vote for Ranked Choice Voting every time the opportunity comes up. RCV obliterates populists and forces politicians to run on the actual issues since obliteration politics don't work - but that isn't on the menu at the moment.)

Telling Trump and the GOP "stop this crap" is the only avenue forward we have, at the moment.

Ironically, I'd say that standing up to the bad guys is the one thing Trump has in common with Reagan. Russia's oil industry (their only true source of revenue on a large scale) has been neutered and the country is a paper tiger, and we are finally standing up to China when assskissing had been the order of the day since Nixon. Want to know why N. Korea has been mainly kept in check? Because KJI thinks Trump might be crazier than he is.

No, what's been lost post-Reagan is the belief in small government, with real teeth behind it, and the freedom and power of the individual as the ultimate ideal. Post-Reagan, I have watched Pub after Pub turn to populism, with "let me tell you what I'll give you if elected" as their easy-out way of winning cheap votes. There's been no real effort to reign in spending, or disband a whit of the massive bureaucracy that's sprung up post-war.

Giving "free" stuff is the chiickenshit way to win an election. The Dems have perfected it for over half a century, and unfortunately the Pubs have fallen in love with it too....it's just different free stuff.

I agree with you that the party started shifting from Reagan before Trump (one could argue they regressed with the past Nixonites under Dubya), but I cannot agree that Trump ever stands up to bad guys. If anything, he's brought them comfort.

But yes, the embracing of populism and the sudden push toward bigger government (which small government used to be such an important part of the GOP) have made today's GOP a strange animal, and the disaster that is Trump is the end result. They'll have to rebrand in 2024.

Reagan had a Democratic House, led by Tip O'Neill, and the two men actually worked together to try to get things done. They didn't agree often on an ideological sense, but they at least tried to communicate and work together. We don't have that any more.

The other thing about Reagan that so many overlook, and it highlights a major problem with Trump: Reagan was a phenomenal communicator to the people. He could bring comfort and ease to the American public. The man knew the right words and had poise. Credit that to his acting career, but still, that's important. When a man can get up in front of the camera and reassure millions, that cannot be underestimated.

So when people dismiss Trump's poor communication as an unimportant factor, they're overlooking history. Trump's idiot words have the power to move idiots, and his missteps in communication have absolutely created problems and division among our public.

Remember Reagan's outstanding speech after the Challenger tragedy? An excerpt:

We'll continue our quest in space. There will be more shuttle flights and more shuttle crews and, yes, more volunteers, more civilians, more teachers in space. Nothing ends here; our hopes and our journeys continue.

I want to add that I wish I could talk to every man and woman who works for NASA or who worked on this mission and tell them: "Your dedication and professionalism have moved and impressed us for decades. And we know of your anguish. We share it."

There's a coincidence today. On this day 390 years ago, the great explorer Sir Francis Drake died aboard ship off the coast of Panama. In his lifetime the great frontiers were the oceans, and an historian later said, "He lived by the sea, died on it, and was buried in it." Well, today we can say of the Challenger crew: Their dedication was, like Drake's, complete.

The crew of the space shuttle Challenger honored us by the manner in which they lived their lives. We will never forget them, nor the last time we saw them, this morning, as they prepared for their journey and waved goodbye and "slipped the surly bonds of earth" to "touch the face of God."


Can you imagine the #### Trump would have said after a tragedy like this? Somehow he would have made it about himself, or how he would have been a great astronaut, or ####, maybe have even insulted those who died.

If the commies win in November you will never see a Republican again elected on the national level in your lifetime. They (commies) will immediately grant amnesty to 20 to 30 (?) million illegals, open the border allowing millions of new commie voters to flow into the country, eliminate the filibuster rule in the senate, eliminate the electoral college and dismantle the constitution.

Well, you're wrong...buttercup.

The only non-Republican I ever voted for was Perot in '92. After that I voted Dole in '96, Dubya the next two, McCain in '08, and Romney in 2012.

I sat out 2016 because I looked at Hillary v. Trump and couldn't vote for either, but I did vote Kasich in the primary. So try again.

As for the "Commies taking over and a Republican will never be elected again", that's exactly the fear-mongering populists aim at low-IQ derps who vote with their guts instead of their heads. (I'm sure that's not you.) Stuff is cyclical...and if the Dems are stupid enough to allow 20-30 million illegal migrants in (they won't be, it's a loser issue and they know it, something like 80% of the population wants stricter border controls), the rest of the country really will turn on them...and the Dems will discover the hard way that by disposition Latino migrants are mostly Catholics who lean more conservative than your average white person from the 'burbs anyway. Dubya knew this, which is exactly why he cut down on the antagonizing rhetoric while quietly ratcheting up the pressure on the border. He knew he could win among Latino voters if he worked at it.

Obama knew this too. He deported a record number of illegals in his two terms. He just wasn't loud about it.

That's not how the world works. It's not either/or. Don't get me wrong; judging by your grasp of the English language, I shouldn't expect much.

Quoz has always been a staunch fiscal conservative, and a person who became disenfranchised by the GOP with their shift in ideology post-Reagan. People like you don't grasp it, and you've come to believe that this weird era of Trumpism is actually conservatism. It's not. The GOP has long since abandoned the traditional definition of conservatism.

When someone criticizes the president or the current state of the GOP, that doesn't automatically make them a liberal socialist Democrat. That's not the way the world operates. It's a shallow mind that immediately runs to that conclusion.

And no one is granting amnesty to all those illegals.
