GT to the B1G

Dec 1, 2012, 5:07 PM

Tiger Fans,

If what I'm hearing is correct......GT will be accepting a bid to the Big Ten on Monday. UVA/UNC or Notre Dame to follow.

SEC is out for Clemson and FSU. They've been blocked by the their in-state rival contingent. ACC is in B1G, B1G trouble as the B1G continues to poach the conference based on lack of leadership from the league office.

I'm going to miss the Clemson rivalry. I hope you guys find a home in the B1G or B12 and don't get relegated to a watered down ACC.

Good luck in Chick Fil-A or Champs Bowl!

I hope to God Clemson has a contingency plan in place.

i.e., a handshake agreement with the Big 12...SEC...

Pac 12 for crying out loud. Anybody but this conference.

We are 1000% committed to the ACC.***

B1G

I can't see UNC going anywhere without Duke. If UVA goes to the B1G, then VT is a lock for the SEC.

Fact is if everyone leaves there is no ACC and no buyout. Conference will disband soon. It has to.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

if enough teams leave before us.....

Dec 1, 2012, 5:17 PM

the combined shares of their exit fees will provide our $50 million to leave ;)

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, we're keeping that money

Dec 1, 2012, 5:42 PM

If Maryland gets out of it, no team will pay it. Big check for us. ;)

B1G wants to expand only in geographically contiguous states. GT is not in such (though UVA is).

NC isn't going anywhere where they can't be in charge. They will be happy with a basketball conference in the ACC and thy will continue to call all the shots.

You know its funny. I've seen these kinds of posts about a thousand times. And everyone of them have been wrong. Yet, I never saw a single post that "Maryland is gone." I think that is because people on the internet have no clue what is actually happening.

Re: GT to the B1G

Dec 1, 2012, 5:32 PM

Wow - some folks here need to "stay classy".

Look this is bittersweet for me, I'm an ACC guy. Been going to GT/CLEMSON games since the Fridge and the Judge were patrolling the D for the Tigers and the BlackWatch was headhunting for GT.

But, if the shoe was on the other foot - you have to make this trade. The $$$s are as much as $10-$15 MIL more a year. The CIC (a research consortium) of the B1G is as much as $750 Million for research grants.

Last year GT's home schedule was Duke, BC, Miami and UVA. In the B1G - I would expect GT would get at least 1 of Nebraska, Penn State, Michigan, OSU, Wisconsin, Michigan State, etc. GT was hosed with the ACC alignment as much as any school....our closest divisional rival in NC (seven hours).

Finally, if we are going to compete with UGA it's the best out we've got.

Hope you guys find a home in the B1G. You've got to get AAU status, but maybe in a few years Clemson can qualify for status.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Glad your rivals will be so much closer for you in the B1G

Dec 1, 2012, 5:36 PM

IDK but if my memory serves me correctly, Clemson didn't play GT when the Judge and Fridge were here. We played GT in '77 and didn't play them again til '85. Must have been another Judge and Fridge.

Re: GT to the B1G

Dec 1, 2012, 9:41 PM [ in reply to Re: GT to the B1G ]

Okay, I'll give you that. And I'll bet that they draw not one more fan more on the field or on TV. In fact, I'll bet they draw LESS. Because nobody gives a crap about seeing Ga Tech play those teams. And in this world of mega college football tv coverage, even less if there is a "bigger' southeast game on. And that is because, with all the games on TV, college football is becoming a regional draw.

Re: GT to the B1G

Dec 1, 2012, 5:41 PM

First - GT's rivals guy is saying this is being done on Monday. GT didn't want this getting out before ACC Championship, but it has somewhat leaked.

Second - Good luck if you want to stay in the ACC. My view is that this is a game of musical chairs. You have to have a chair at the big boy table.

Third - Regarding close rivals.....we'll still play UGA and I'd expect we'll see a contingent of Duke/UNC/UVA/FSU potentially join the B1G. Maybe Clemson. No reason to get upset. Also getting some heavy hitters from B1G to visit will be awesome.

Clemson has some BIG choices ahead of itself. Do they want to be a player? Or do they want to stay in ACC?

SEC will add any team they think will help the conference. No one team can block anything.
