Furman just got screwed at Virginia Tech.

Recovered an onside kick with just under 2 minutes left, down by 7. Refs reviewed it and overturned it based on a Furman player supposedly blocking a VT player. Home cooking for sure!

Yeah I didn’t agree with it either. Reminds me of the BS call that helped end the UNC/Wake game. Seems like refs can interpret rules differently and screw teams.

And in fact it gives a blueprint to any receiving team to never lose an onside kick. You just have each player step inside the 10 yard box and draw any contact.
Bad call (or bad application of a bad rule).

Kinda the same thing happen with us and Bama, isn't it. They said we blocked a player before the ball traveled 10 yards. That is a stupid unfair rule bc it's like giving the kicking team an unfair advantage to recover the the ball as soon as it travels 10 yards because the ball is fair game after going 10 yards. I say unfair bc the ball was being kicked to us, and we should have the rights to block anyone trying to cover it at the same time as we do, I mean aren't we suppose to have the first rights to the ball, if yes, we should've had the rights to block the kicking team away from it. That is a rule that should be revised bc it's a double standard rule IMO!!!

This is the rule in question:
No Team A player may block an opponent until Team A is eligible to touch a free-kicked ball
(A.R. 6-1-3:II)
In this case Team A is the kicking team.
The ruling was that the kicking team (Furman) blocked a receiving team (VT) player before the ball had traveled 10 yards. There was contact, but it was initiated by the VT player and was FAR from a block.
The rule says nothing of the receiving team blocking.
