Venables: FSU will break scoreboard if defensive woes aren't fixed

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables said he knows that if certain areas don’t improve, the Tigers could be in for a long day in Tallahassee. Full Story »

Thank You, BV, for the honesty, instead of "We'll fix it"

THIS WEEK BETTER COMPARE TO #### WEEK FOR DEFENSE

Posted: Sep 15, 2012 10:51 PM

Last national game we got embarassed. ANOTHER National stage ths week. Time to show NATION WV was fluke and we are better defense and team as a whole. Lets not get embarassed a second consecutive time ON NATIONAL STAGE. IT EFFECTS RECRUITING!!!!!!!

Yea our recruting has really stunk sense the orange bowl. Lighten up some enjo victories and life!

Play Steward, Play Townsend, and Play Blanks at safety

How can any coach in America think that Wright is better than Steward? Look at the difference b/t the first half with Wright and the second half with Steward.

I safetys have been taking horrible angles. Try Blanks back there.

Townsend? give him a shot. We can't do any worse.

Re: Play Steward, Play Townsend, and Play Blanks at safety

Agree, if we're gonna fail, we might as well do it with all our 5* recruits out there.

COLLEGE: A three-year starter at strong safety for Clemson, finished his career with 234 tackles and 11 interceptions.

Play Steward and Blanks. That is why they are here.

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 12:45 PM

Hope Venables agrees. Blanks and Steward can change everything with their athleticism. Go Tigers. This game means so much. If Florida State breaks scoreboard Clemson's recruiting is screwed for next several years. Florida State will own the ACC for 5 years if they win handily Saturday.

How do you figure that? We have owned them recently

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 3:28 PM

but it didn't hurt their recruiting. That said, I do think we will get lit up by them. I just hope it isn't Orange Bowl Part 2...

He is not sugar coating it. Just laying it out there and wants his guys to realize what they must do to win...

I give him no credit

You me and the frickin' stadium light towers know we can't play defense. He doesn't draw a paycheck to know we suck on the defensive side of the ball right now he gets paid to do something about it. To date, he has not.

I'd hate to be a defensive player come Monday

[2]
Posted: Sep 15, 2012 9:47 PM

Brent is not happy. But I'm happy that he's not happy. He's not making excuses for his players or the product on the field. He's going to make our players own up to what they are doign wrong or play someone else ahead of them if they don't shape up.

Unless I'm wrong he was very hard on Chrsitian the past few weeks and started blanks over him today. Chrsitian seemed to play harder today as a result.

Coot. How can he judge the defense after just 3 weeks?*

Furman scored 32 on Fla last year. Every fcs or mid major team I saw yesterday hung with their opponent for a half. A lot of talent to go around and guys playing with chips on their shoulder and that holds up for a half. Heck the SEC east has lost 2 games to them and Auburn took an over time. UAB looked preety good for the first half

Sure we don't KNOW for sure how we'll do but we have to go on what we've seen so far.... and it has been mediocre at best.

If you can honestly look @ the last 2 weeks performance on d and NOT be fearful for next Sat. night, I'd be very surprised. That's the nicest way I can say it.

Ball State and Furman ? and AU is very average.

I certainly hope we play differently Sat night.

O must put up 40 and we need to win to battle by 2 for it to

Are Jarrett and Williams just too small to play D tackle?

Clemson is getting killed on gap control, but doesn't that start on the line?

I heard too much that these two were going to be fantastic, but what is giving way here? Seems like most of the complaining is coming from the linebacker side of the ball.

Venables knows what he is doing. He is lulling FSU into a false sense of greatness only to stomp their heads in the ground and cut their nuts off! The Criminoles won't score 20 points on us. #### right I feel confident. Tired of hearing all this #### about our D. They will man up and make us proud! GO TIGERS!

Venables "lulling" Fla. State??? Have you watched our "defence" over the past three games? Did you happen to watch the Noles demolish Wake Forest today? I think Coach V., much more so than Dabo, is trying to prepare us for the reality that next Saturday night is going to be a long and embarrassing one for us. Telling it like it is doesn't constitute dumping on our D. They do a good enough job of that themselves---and unfortunately they'll very likely leave a pile of it on the field next Saturday.

Yeah I watched them demolish a team on the same level as Ball State basically. Wake is not good period. If FSU beats us by 50 then yeah I will say we are screwed and they are that good. Until then I will put my money on BV and Clemson.

This is the stock excuse always used for every bad defense to ever play the game. It's always proven wrong when tested.

Re: Front Page Story: Venables: FSU will break scoreboard if defensive woes aren't fixed

You must have been watching a different defense than I saw on Saturday.

Re: Front Page Story: Venables: FSU will break scoreboard if defensive woes aren't fixed

It's easy to see what is happening on the "D". 2 issues. For the secondary, the coverage is way too soft. They're getting left in their shoes on curl routes and slants. They do pretty good defending streaks. More evidence of this is when the defense tightens up in the red zone, less field to zone cover, more men in a smaller area, better defense.

The issue with the run is that the Tigers are not wrapping them up and taking them to the ground. I saw way too many yards gained in the last 3 games after the point of initial contact. The defense is going for the BIG HIT, lowering their shoulder into the ball carrier as if to knock him off his feet - what is happening however, is the ballcarrier is bouncing off them for at least an additional 3 yards. If the defender can not get them to the ground, then he needs to hold onto the ballcarrier and wait for the calvary.

All in all - it is not the scheme that is making the defense suck, it is the discipline of the individual players.

I even watched Anthony get burned by not wrapping up defenders yesterday - and Anthony and Blanks seem to be the most disciplined kids on that side of the ball.

Couldn't agree more. I saw way too many yards after contact yesterday. Seems like it often took 3 or 4 guys to finally bring the guy down. Seems like either poor tackling technique or lack of size/strength.

New year, same old tune...blah blah blah

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 8:37 AM

stop talking about it and fix it!! Sounds just like Steele.

Now you see why OU's defense was garbage under this guy. He sucks.

Re: New year, same old tune...blah blah blah

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 12:52 PM

Actually, I remember watching the Oklahoma /FSU game last year and thinking - "I wish we had a defense as mean as that".

I was shocked and elated that we got BV. The breakdown is with the players vision and discipline. Those "intangibles" the coaches are always talking about. They're playing too soft and lack intuition.

This is the sort of thing that can only be overcome with recruiting. Some of the kids have it, but we need some key people in every tier of the defense to really become a force.

I am very happy with Travis Blanks and Stephone Anthony as well as Beasley stepping up.

Re: New year, same old tune...blah blah blah

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 7:16 PM

I also don't think a coach can correct the problems with existing players in three games. My hope is that we'll see steady improvement from week to week.

And the numbers bear it out as well

2008 - 68th ranked defense
2009 - 8th
2010 - 53rd
2011 - 55th

that's garbage defense by any standard.

BV has seen lots of spread offenses in the Big XII but just like steele, he never figured out how to stop them.

Ridiculous post.***

We had 385 yards rushing against Wake on Saturday. I expect no less than 450 against the Clemson defense. This is going to be one of the longest weeks of the season, waiting in anticipation of this Nationally televised Gameday Saturday in Tallahassee. Welcome all Clemson fans.

Excellent, maintain that type of thinking...

As I told the guy sitting beside me at the game - our defense tired out the Furman offense keeping them on the field that long. Maybe that is our plan.

seriously - i sure hope we can run the ball this week better than we did saturday. I knew our defense was an issue - but the lack of making holes for ellington is just as bad.

Re: Front Page Story: Venables: FSU will break scoreboard if defensive woes aren't fixed

All due respect-Doubt that keeping their offense on the field to wear them out is the plan.

Mount Adams will be in attendance.

Posted: Sep 16, 2012 3:33 PM

This game has HUGE implications, not only within the ACC but on the recruiting trail. A signature win in Doak definitely leaves an imprint on guys like Adams and Alexander.
