FSU exposes Clemson defense in 49-37 loss
Clemson’s offense played like a champion for three quarters, but poor tackling, blown assignments, penalties on defense and special teams coverage issues erased what was a promising 14-point third quarter lead for Clemson as No. 4 Florida St. went on a 35-3 run late in the game to defeat No. 10 Clemson 49-37 Saturday night at Doak Campbell Stadium. , after watching tonight, it is something I feel can improve over the course of the season. We lost a lot of guys last year, in addition to getting the new coordinator.

everyone thought the defense was great going in. Us, the national media, Vegas, etc.... all saw this coming against our D.

Expose FSU's defense. We weren't suppose to score on their #1 defense.

I don't know if that's the way I'd put it.

Our O is top shelf, I'd say we just substantiated their D.
At times we ran over them with new plays and gimics. But, we had to resort to thing they hadn't seen and trickery to do it.

Our offense wasn't the question. I don't recall any knowledgeable person saying we wouldn't score on FSU. In fact, they played well enought to win. But in the big time, you usually don't win without a defense, and ours is pathetic.

I agree. To me, our defense had been exposed long before this, and only confirmed the worst (and realistic) expectations. I think the main issue is a lack of talent, and major problems in our S&C program. And that stuff simply isn't going to get "fixed" short-term. Coach Swinney seems basically in denial regarding the severity of the problem.

I do not believe for one minute that this defense would be this bad under Randy Shannon. I have my doubts about Venables.

Well, not exactly. A lot of the bidding that pushed the line above 14 was from people thinking the the FSU defense would prevent much scoring on Clemson's part. It's my experience with sports book that when points spreads are high with two known good offenses, the thought is usually that one side contains the other. Especially when o/u is not real high.

How can you "expose" something we all knew was a problem?

I agree. "confirmed what had already been exposed" would probably been a preferable phrase.

I agree the momentum shifted with the big return. But like in the past few years, we seemed to let it get to both squads. Had we stayed controlled and aggressive on offense, we could have prevented a lot of the momementum grab, especially knowing what this article suggests - we weren't going to be able to rely on defense. So many unanswered points is a big problem for us if it continues. Outscoring our defense is the only stategy we have.
