I believe that at least 96/97% of Clemson fans that hated the idea of Dabo getting the HC job at Clemson back then. They are glad he has worked out so far, and they are loving him also....

Re: To be honest...

Sep 19, 2012, 9:10 PM

Unless you're a program like Alabama, there are going to have to be rebuilding years. I think a title run every four years sounds reasonable. Wanting a legitimate run at a BCS Bowl every year sounds more like a good goal.

If the Tigers can beat Florida State this weekend, I honestly think a title run this year is very realistic. Wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit.

Y'all, we hit the coaching lottery when we got Dabo. I swear

Sep 19, 2012, 9:08 PM

I've had this feeling since he got the nod as Interim Head Coach that there was something brewing in Tiger Town & something awfully special about him and the way he became our Head Coach.

Some stories he's told about why he believes this was supposed to happen:

1. He's from Pelham, AL. The first sign he saw as he left GSP when he came to interview at Clemson for WR Coach was a sign for Pelham Road.

2. The first day he pulled into his "Head Coach" reserved parking spot, the day after being named interim head coach, and parking in Tommy Bowden's former parking spot, his headlights hit the curb, and it was reserved spot 81. His college jersey #.

3. When Dabo was about 10 years old he was at a birthday party (for his mom, I think) and Frank Howard - also from Alabama - happened to be there. He rubbed Dabo's head and said something like "Maybe you'll be the head coach at Clemson one day"

JUST TOO WEIRD if you ask me!!!! It was meant to be!

a great coach. Great coaches do far more than Dabo has done in less time.

To win a national championship we are going to have to be able to beat Bama or LSU. We have the talent, but our coaching and player development are not even close. Before we can even think about national titles we need to ...

1. Beat USC consistently
2. Win bowl games consistently
3. Win games against teams that finish the year in the top 20
4. Stop getting blown out by mediocre and inferior teams
5. Learn how to beat GT
6. Start being consistent week in and week out, not wildly unpredictable
7. Develop a dominant defense
8. Get a whole LOT tougher
9. Develop a solid OL

Until we do those thinks, we are a good team, but not truly solid and nowhere close to great.

This is only Dabo's fourth full season, correct? In his third year he put up a better season than any of Tommy Bowden's ten.

I think we'll know a lot more after this season. If he can put up 10 wins this year, I think we're on the right track.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

10 wins with our talent and easy schedule is not impressive

Sep 19, 2012, 11:55 PM

he can go 1o-3 and not accomplish a single important goal. Wins are weak unless you win the big games.

Re: Keep drinking that kool aid. He has shown zero ability to be

Sep 19, 2012, 9:33 PM [ in reply to Keep drinking that kool aid. He has shown zero ability to be ]

I generally agree with your list but I would make a couple of key points:

Re "great coaches do more than Dabo has done in less time" - how about some great coaches do more more quickly. That's a nice platitude, but doesn't realy wash in the real world.

Some pretty bad coaches experience a lot of success early on but have trouble sustaining it - examples: Charlie Weis, Chuck Amato Gene Chizik, Ken Hatfield and countless others.

Also, some truly great coaches have taken a long time to build their programs to respectability, much less greatness - examples: Frank Beamer, Nick Saban (at MSU), Bobby Bowden, and even Frank Howard. Sometimes it takes time - lots of it - to build a great team and a great program.

Re: point 6 - building a predictably good team is the most difficult task for a college coach. Even Alabama and LSU - not to mention USC, Oregon, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State, as great as they have been recently, can be wildly unpredictable. Each of them have had head-scratching losses in recent memory.

I agree there is room for improvement across the board, including with our HC. But if you want a program that is built for the long haul, then you should at least be willing to accept that slow, methodical progress is still progress, and I believe we're making progress.

Re: Keep drinking that kool aid. He has shown zero ability to be

Sep 19, 2012, 10:36 PM

I totally agree; as long as you can recruit from the inside out. It's won or lost on the line of scrimmage. And, as Nick Saban said, most games are won or lost in the off season(i.e. weight room), and that's where, in my humble opinion) we fall way short. Oh god, here come the thought police. Our players don't gain the size and strength they need to rule the line of scrimmage. Who is accountable?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow. Where to start ..........

Sep 20, 2012, 12:15 AM [ in reply to Re: Keep drinking that kool aid. He has shown zero ability to be ]

Charlie Weis was not very successful. Willingham needed more time and set the able or Weiss' 1st 2 years.

Chuck Amato only had one solid year. Not sure why you think he was a success.

Gene Chizik won a NC in year 2. Way too early to discount him, he is just getting started.

Ken Hatfield was successful pretty much everywhere he coached except Clemson and his early success was because Ford left a great program for him.

"some truly great coaches have taken a long time to build their programs to respectability"

Wrong, that is very rare.

Beamer is the only one and he had very little to work with when he started. Dooley had a few good years, but VT was not a serious program by any streth when he got there. Few programs would ever give a coach that long.

Nick Saban was only at MSU 5 years.

Bobby Bowden won immediately at FSU. 10-2 his 2nd season.

Frank Howard never built much of a program. He had a slid year every now and then, but he was not a great coach. He is a legend, but not for success on the field.

We sucked for decades, yet Charlie Pell went 11-1 his 2nd year. For won the NC his 3rd year.

Yes, it might take a while to build a consistent program, but the great coaches show significant improvement with the talent they inherited within 2 or 3 yeas.

We are better under Dabo, but that is because he took over a program TB rebuilt, but he was under achieving. Dabo has grossly under achieved as well and while we are better, we are not significantly better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did you read the full story??

Sep 20, 2012, 8:40 AM

It was pretty obvious he has changed and is continuing to change the culture at Clemson. Wins and losses at this point show that Clemson's football program is improving, but it is not even close to being indicative of what it WILL be.

Your negativity is really a loser's mentality. I'm not saying that just to hurl insults, but to make the point that attitude and drive really determine success when it is all said and done. It would be hard to find a success story that didn't start there. Negativity and cynicism turn into failure stories at a very high rate.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yawn. He has already beat GT in DV. He will beat them again

Great post. Realistic. I'm full of hope re: the FSU game, but, based on last year, we didn't come out smoking after adversity. My heart: we pull off the upset. My head: they beat us big time. Hope the hell I'm wrong. I love Dabo, but doubt his ability to realistically assess player/team ability.

Now we're talking!

Sep 20, 2012, 9:50 AM

I think this is exactly what Clemson fans have been waiting for a head coach to say since the end of the 80's. The fans want it. This is why Clemson fans get so down when we lose a game. Because every Clemson fan has the highest of expectations for the season. There is only one goal in the back of everyone's mind. Not to beat south carolina, not to win the ACC....but to become National Champions again. We can taste it b/c we've tasted it before. And every year seems to be one step closer. Finally glad the head coach has the same ultimate desire stirring around in that noggin of his!
