No, it was because you had great coaching wisdom...like, hey, lets give this true freshman the first hand off against Bama instead of Davis or Spiller

Re: and the epic

Aug 29, 2012, 11:35 AM

That was a horrible decision! What was he thinking? I remember that Jad Dean had been in a major funk and was missing extra points and we wanted him to hit the game winner vs. our arch rival!!! Major coaching error, which led to an upset loss.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I did like him refusing to kick extra points though

Aug 29, 2012, 1:15 PM

that it would take some football knowledge, or knowledge of the team ("that guy" instead of Merriweather, and not knowing that Davis had been the better back) to know why Merriweather got taken out?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that's really not fair... who wouldn't have put Davis in?

Aug 29, 2012, 1:13 PM [ in reply to and the epic ]

Davis was the better running back, and although Merriweather had been moving the ball, we all have no idea whether that would've continued. To blame Bowden for Davis not getting into the endzone, and then for Dean missing the kick at the end, is to engage in some pretty flagrant hindsight.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Uh, lots of folks wouldn't have...

Aug 29, 2012, 1:46 PM

Davis was ineffective that entire game. He wasn't the same back after that shoulder injury vs. VT. Now, the clear choice would have been CJ Spiller, who was killing the coots that day, but the dirty #### coots twisted his ankle in a pile and got him out of the game when Reggie came in.
It was the simple coddling of a player that Bowden pulled that day and was a symptom of why the man couldn't get over the hump at Clemson. When Freeman and others talk about "changing the culture" under Dabo, THIS is the type of thing they are talking about most.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Disagree...

Aug 29, 2012, 1:47 PM [ in reply to that's really not fair... who wouldn't have put Davis in? ]

at that moment, Merriweather was the best running back. A mac truck would not stop him at that point. Merriweather had gained more yds in 3 carries than Davis had in 11 carries. Davis was averging 1.7 yds per carry to Reggie's 7.7. That was the dumbest move TB made as a coach at Clemson and I will never forgive him for it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree...only an idiot would defend pulling Reggie...***

Go with the "hot" hand ...

Aug 29, 2012, 2:40 PM [ in reply to that's really not fair... who wouldn't have put Davis in? ]

Being born and raised in the Palmetto State, I have always firmly believed(contrary to what some out-of-staters want to say) that South Carolina players just naturally WANT the win in the rivalry more.

To have a senior RB from South Carolina in his final home game, running the ball like his hair was on fire at that critical juncture vs. SCAR and to take him out in favor of an injured and largely ineffective guy from Atlanta was a huge coaching mistake IMHO.

Re: I do remember there being some of the Hardest hits

Even Auburn coaches and players admitted that was the most physical game of the year. Coots hated hearing that the National Champions toughest game of the year was against a lowly ACC team and not a rugged SEC power like they thought they were!
