First kick Lakip missed isn't all that easy.

Sep 23, 2014, 3:33 PM

You've got to hit it on a pretty sharp angle from that hash at such a short distance. I've seen right footed kickers miss the kick right, or hit the right upright from that hash several times. You can tell that's what Lakip is thinking about when he pulls it so far left. He was just thinking about it too much and wanted to make sure he didn't leave it right, so instead, he yanked it left. I wouldn't have minded Dabo taking a delay of game penalty or even a false start to give Lakip 5 more yards and an easier angle for the kick. I think a detailed special teams coach would have at least brought up the idea. In this case, a 27 yard field goal would have been easier than a 22 yard field goal because the ball was on the right hash.

Yea...but his duck hook wasn't even close.

Sep 23, 2014, 3:36 PM

Not only did he miss the kick, he missed it badly.

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

He wasn't using his normal motion

Sep 23, 2014, 3:38 PM

He was coming across the ball hard to get it past the right upright, instead of swinging through the ball like he normally does. The kid kicks a nice ball, not always accurate, but he has good leg talent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just trying to give perspective on why he hooked it

Sep 23, 2014, 3:46 PM

He's trying to get it past the right goal post, which isn't that easy when you're on the right hash, and literally kicking the shortest field goal possible in the game of football. Go stand out on a college field (not a high school field because they have wider posts) and check it out for yourself. Yes, he should have hit it. I'm just trying to tell you why he hooked it so far left.

90% of D1 kickers make that kick

Sep 23, 2014, 3:36 PM

90% of the time

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Probably more like 97%

Sep 23, 2014, 3:38 PM

75% of high school kickers make that one 90% of the time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

High school kickers also get a tee and wider Goal Posts

Sep 23, 2014, 3:40 PM

So there is that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lakip has had 3+ years to learn to kick off the ground

Sep 23, 2014, 3:51 PM

and wider goalposts wouldn't have helped him on that one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wider goalposts do help on that kick

Sep 23, 2014, 3:52 PM

You don't have to kick it so sharply to get it past the right post if the posts are wider. Do you need a geometry lesson

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Wider goalposts do help on that kick

Sep 23, 2014, 4:01 PM

It's a chipshot. He choked plain and simple.

Hopefully he gets over it and goes on to have 2 successful seasons as Clemson's kicker, because I'm sure we'll have another game come down to fieldgoals at some point.

I only say this from experience

Sep 23, 2014, 3:39 PM

It's a tough angle and I would rather back up, because I know I have the leg to hit a FG 27 yards but you've got to hit across, not through the ball at such a tight angle.

Re: I only say this from experience

Sep 23, 2014, 3:48 PM

What is your experience?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Football (high school) and Rugby kicker

Sep 23, 2014, 3:51 PM

In Rugby I always brought the ball out to improve the angle because I know I have the leg.

I also worked with kickers as a coach.

I'm not saying he should have missed it, I'm just trying to explain why he did miss it. That angle sucks, which is why he was kicking across the ball.

IMO you make a good point. I still think he chocked but I think ALL athletes have moments where their head stops their body from doing what is typically an easy task. I hope he gets it right. I think he's a good young man.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

my experience... Is almost every kicker in the country hits

Sep 23, 2014, 4:07 PM [ in reply to Re: I only say this from experience ]

that kick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the problem is he needs to stop kicking at the fake upright

No excuses for missing a 23 yard field goal

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought it was a blunder on the play after the bad snap,

Sep 23, 2014, 3:41 PM

where it's 3rd and goal from the 24, not to center the ball. If you're just going to call a draw play, you might as well have the runner knows to land in the middle of the field for your young, inexperienced kicker.

I'm not saying it was a coaching error because it's difficult to convey that in the short amount of time between plays, but it would have been the high-IQ football play to center it there.

Re: First kick Lakip missed isn't all that easy.

Sep 23, 2014, 3:42 PM

How come everyone else's kicker is not struggling? Lakip says he thrives on the pressure but doesn't show it when it is time. He is a little bit of a head case right now, I won't he has cost us two games but if he makes the JAWJA kick and the two Sat night you never know. We lost Mo in both games and whoever keeps it the most on your side stands a better chance!

Georgia's kicker lost them the Scar game

Sep 23, 2014, 3:43 PM

K. State's kicker lost them the Auburn game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's almost an impossibility to miss it that bad. I'm not

Sep 23, 2014, 3:46 PM

sure you could intentionally try and miss it that bad.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He miss hit it

Sep 23, 2014, 3:47 PM

Trying to get his foot around the ball instead of putting his foot through the ball. He was worried to much about the right post.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I thought exactly the same thing. In fact, I was really

Sep 23, 2014, 4:21 PM

surprised Clemson didn't simply go for it there, because I could envision him missing that kick from that angle. Either that or take a 5 year delay penalty to make the angle a little better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

5 years is really harsh.***
