Feed Him Plenty of Oats

Nov 11, 2019, 8:48 PM

When I was about eight years old, there was a man in my home town who had a couple of beautiful Tennessee Walking Horses. One day he came by our house riding one of his horses. The thing that impressed me was the tail on that horse, entirely different than the tails of the other horses in the area.

When my Dad came home from his office I was going to ask him about that tail. I did not mention that I was referring to the tail on a Tennessee Walking Horse, my question was, "what makes a horse hold his tail up"? His response, "feed him plenty of oats, son". Being a bit naïve at that age I didn't get the drift of his response. About two years later a man came by the house on a regular, "barnyard" horse. The horse raised his tail and "de-oated". Suddenly, I caught the drift of my Dad's response and burst out laughing.

As well said, and explained to the non-farm crowd as I ever heard.

And we are supposed to be fans of a "Cow College". How far we have come over the years. Some of it good, but some not so good.

Joe, my father-in-law showed Tennessee Walking Horses in Raleigh 50+ years ago. I heard it said that the way they got them to hold up their tails was to apply some ginger in the horse's oats exhaust. I don't think it was considered ethical, but it was done by some.
