If COVID19 shuts down clemson for semester...

Mar 4, 2020, 3:07 PM

Does spring football halt as well? Hearing rumors of classes going to online potentially. This could be an interesting spring practice/recruiting/game and then season. Folks are scared, panicking, hoarding and staying away already.

That kind of makes sense if it has to get to that.

There was a big outbreak of flu back in 1981-82 time frame. Over 5000 students reported to Redfern for treatment. Classes were only about 1/2 or less full for about 2 weeks. I got a light case of flu, but I didn't miss any classes. I probably just spread it around.

No country has been able to contain COVID19. Next step is mitigation. Closing schools, public gatherings, etc.

...OR acknowledging that the virus mostly effects already compromised immune systems and the elderly. Most people just experience cold and flu-like symptoms. Meanwhile, thousands are dying from the strongest flu season in a decade (crickets).

Terrifying point. Our already poor and overburden healthcare system that's currently battling a possible flu epidemic also has to deal with COVID19. This is going to overwhelm our medical facilities.

My friend’s son is a student there and apparently it’s....

Mar 4, 2020, 4:11 PM

In discussion among students and faculty. I too believe this is all an overreaction but being from the lowcountry all it takes is a chance of 1/2 inch of snow to clear the grocery of bread. You know how people can react. Oh well... nothing to see here!!!.... yet

Decision made last week apparently included no student input.

If they are successful in getting the Study Abroad students back a whole new
situation may transpire.

Remember that not only students are involved, older faculty, staff and others
are seven times at risk of fatality than the student age group.

Faculty and staff have been asked to make up plans for being

Mar 4, 2020, 5:29 PM

able to continue education in the event that "students lack access to campus for an extended part of the remainder of the semester."

It's good that the University has asked all departments to do so. It's always better to be "safe than sorry," and as someone's already said, all countries hit the hardest the earliest (China, Japan, Korea, Italy, etc.) have had to take drastic measures to try to limit the spread.

Unfortunately, to do what is asked would be very difficult for many classes, if necessary.

At least it is not the Great Steak poisoning of the fall of 1969. That threw a lot of wrenches in
the weekend. At least we did not have a home football game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The media is loving this. It's a strong flu. Nothing more.

Mar 4, 2020, 6:43 PM

People died by the thousands in China because it was elderly people with comorbidities and they let old people just die over there. These's that fantastic socialized medicine that some of you here think is such a brilliant idea. Those who have died in the US were in nursing homes....once again....elderly with comorbidities.....the same people that Flu A kills here.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Also, isn't it law in China that you have to smoke.?

Mar 4, 2020, 6:50 PM

Which further compromises the immune system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That only applies to the elderly with comorbidities.

65+ in China are made to smoke Cuban Cigars.
