FSU has effectively entered

Sep 20, 2019, 10:20 AM

The Tommy West/Bowden years of it's football journey . Willie Taggart was a disastrous hire and they're so bad right now I can't imagine a worse scenario than keeping Taggart past the next game .
Now I don't suspect that they'll let him go in reality ...not this year anyway but why hang on to a guy with his record and with lots of good enough coaches out there that would kill to be coaching in Tallahassee ?

War Chant is on fire right now . It's a comedy fest over there . Lots of funny threads .

worse than FSU is right now. Not since the late 60s/very early 70s, anyway. Tommy West took over a battered and bruised program. He may not have been Dabo but he was well liked and respected.

This FSU dumpster fire exists as it does because the players quit on Jimbo Fisher 2 years before he left. When that quitters mentality permeates a program it takes a special coach to bring it back and Taggart isn't that guy, obviously. They are in a very dark place from a team chemistry/psychology standpoint. Clemson was never on that level, ever.

Jimbo quit on the players before they quit on him.

Sep 20, 2019, 5:59 PM [ in reply to We may have had a losing season in '98 but we were NEVER ]

I am convinced that within 72 hours of Texas A&M losing their opening game against UCLA (aTm led 44-10 late in the third and lost 45-44) Jimbo knew that the aTm job was his. He just had his agent, Jimmy Sexton, handle the details of what turned out to be a 75M contract.

Jimbo quit recruiting. He pulled his assistants off the recruiting trail. He quit on the team. Academics and anything related to discipline was dismissed as unnecessary.

Willie walked into a dumpster fire. And, it appears he can't put it out.

Tommy West took over a program that recently won the ACC

Sep 23, 2019, 1:14 PM [ in reply to We may have had a losing season in '98 but we were NEVER ]

and won 8 games the year he took over. Granted, recruiting had dipped under Hatfield compared to Ford, but we were not nearly as bad when West took over as we became a few years later. West was an awful hire. Hiring a guy because he was good 'ol boy who coached under Danny Ford is a horrible reason to hire someone.

I would take Hatfield any day over West, and it isn't even close. Nice guy or not, West wasn't ready for the job and our decline in the mid-late 90s was his fault way more than it was Hatfield's.

In all seriousness, Taggart did have a really strong track

Sep 20, 2019, 10:55 AM [ in reply to Re: FSU has effectively entered ]

record of turning bad programs around. The question with him for me was always whether or not he could actually coach because his rebuilds generally took ~3 years and his teams often showed no progress or even regressed in year 1. In my opinion a coach that really knows how to coach football will have his team playing more competitive football in year 1 and will frequently make a big leap in year 2. That never happened under Taggart which led me to believe he was more of a program builder, recruiter, and culture type guy.

Now that can work at a high level, but it requires making good coordinator and assistant hires and possibly also some patience from the administration while the program goes through some growing pains. Thus far FSU has looked like a poorly coached team and there's already been a lot of shakeup on Taggart's staff. He's quickly running out of time to get it right because the product on the field has been so bad that everyone in Tallahassee is already running out of patience with him. It's still possible he would get things turned around in year 3 or so, but will he actually be given that much time. Probably not.. unless FSU starts to show improvement.

Taggart did have a really strong track record????

Sep 23, 2019, 2:30 PM [ in reply to In all seriousness, Taggart did have a really strong track ]

Taggart posted a losing record at Western Ky. The coaches that followed him were Petrino and Brohm, two coaches with better reputations on the field. Was Western KY a Taggart turnaround? I think not. Was Taggart a great recruiter at Western Ky? I don't think so.

Taggart posted a losing record at South Florida. His final year he went 10-2 for really the only solid year he has had in a ten year career. And Taggart was preceded at USF by Skip Holtz and Jim Leavitt and he was succeed by Charlie Strong. Leavitt and Strong both posted significantly better records at USF than Taggart. So the only coach at USF to do worse than Taggart was Skip Holtz who was fired after two and a half seasons. BTW, Holtz has 200+ wins in his career, Leavitt built USF into a decent football school and Charlie Strong is generally well thought of a fine coach who did not succeed at Texas.

Taggart was at Oregon for one year. Was Oregon his turnaround team? Is FSU going to be a success?

I dunno about FSU, but I'm not riding the 'Taggart as a turnaround coaching artist' bandwagon. I think that Taggart's success in the past has been greatly puffed up. He may succeed at FSU, but I doubt it.

Sep 20, 2019, 10:38 AM

Jeff Brohm and Matt Campbell have been two big up-and-coming guys but neither looks like they will have a great season.

I really doubt Urban Meyer would go there over USC if he does come out of retirement again.

I guess Josh Heupel is right down the road but I would feel better about hiring him if he keeps this up at UCF through 2020. Right now it's unclear how much is him and how much is still Scott Frost. He has done a good job maintaining that program thus far but I think another year and a half at UCF would be good before one of the top programs goes after him.

Sep 20, 2019, 12:03 PM

FSU has been the last 4 years is WAY off the mark. A losing season is one thing. The complete destruction of an entire program almost overnight and wallowing in the cess of quitting and rock bottom morale with the recruits they get is something else entirely. Jimbo Fisher was a disaster way before Taggart got there. Jimbo Fisher can't carry Tommy West's jock strap when it comes to being a quality and respectable human being. The 2 situations aren't even remotely comparable.

Sep 20, 2019, 12:54 PM

Not sure many coaches "would kill" to be at FSU right now. Following Bowden and Jimbo with a fanbase that wants to run a guy out 1.5 years in doesn't bode well. If I was FSU, I would hold onto Taggart for next season, give him a chance, and then look for an up and coming coach. Has-beens (the Muscoots and and Chip Kelly's) of the world have played all their cards. You know what you're getting. Some would say Taggart fits that category given his less than stellar record. I still believe a lot of the mess there was caused by Jimbo. Not going to defend his in-game mistakes but that place was going to be a dumpster fire after Jimbo left in that fashion. Worst thing they can do is overreact and fire Taggart without having their guy on deck

As it is for Chip Kelly, Pruitt, etc. These guys are in their 2nd year- if you are an admin that wants to build a program then you can't worry about the short term social media and shock jock BS, or alumni even being counterproductive. He still doesn't have his QB yet- the loss of Sam Howell which was a direct result of MB being hired by the Heels may have delayed that also. You look for improvements on the OL and hope you win enough to finish above .500 in the league and go bowling. They are in the same boat as almost every team not named Clemson in the ACC. They have a chance in every game except CU as they showed last week at UVA.

You can't blame WT for the JF's failures to recruit/dev any decent OL or great QB his last few years.

I think you are also painting this stretch of FSU football a little worse than reality. Sure it's been bad compared to where they had become accustomed to the last couple of years but they also didn't adjust well to becoming 2nd fiddle. There was some fools gold there under Jimbo the 2nd half of his tenure caused by his poor leadership but they were 14-0, 13-1, 10-3, 10-3, 7-6, 5-7(WT). Last time I checked, this year isn't anywhere close to being done and CU is the only definitive loss on their schedule. Reality says they probably go 5-7 to 7-5 again but I believe next year is when they would realistically hope to be back to 8 and go from there but that's not out of the question yet for this year.

And both losses have been close. My guess is they improve as the season progresses. Still a long way to go to become respectable.

So basically you are saying Jimbo = Hatfield.

He took over a championship level program and benefited from the leftover talent, but he was clearly headed downhill at the end.

I guess that means Taggart = West. I hope he lasts as long as West did.

Do you pay for Warchant? I'd like to see what's up over there, but can't see paying to read a forum for an opposing team.

Remember when Bobby Bowden use to run up the score on everyone in the ACC for style points?

Well karma is a byatch FSU. I hope they languish in mediocrity for years.

I agree , but I also think that we're in a sort of zone right now where as long as we take care and win out we almost auto-qualify for the playoff .

Good analogy.

Could say the Dubose/Franchione years of Bama, or the Hallman/Dinardo years at LSU.

From all evidence so far, Taggart was a huge mistake. And, normally it takes a string of 2 or 3 coaches (or more) between good hires.

Every AD thinks that every hire is a great hire when they hire the guy. Most of the time they are wrong.

I thoroughly enjoyed our dynasty years, still unmatched. (14 straight years being ranked in the top 4) Bama and Clemson both look like they are in that kind of stretch. My advice to all their fans - enjoy the ride, don't be critical of the little missteps along the ride, just enjoy the heck out of it while it lasts.

Unfortunately for me, I rear that FSU is just at the beginning of our "not so good (to say the least)" run.

Coaching matters.

FSU is still a very talented bunch. Athletes all over the field. They don’t play as a team for 4 quarters. But if you look at how they jumped on Louisville in the first quarter you can see the talent. If they ever gain the confidence and coaching to play a 4 quarter game as a team, not a bunch of entitled athletes, they will be back to being FSU. Everyone is saying the most dangerous team we will face is UofSC. I disagree. It’s FSU by far. FSU is much more talented...and dangerous.
