Sep 16, 2016, 1:15 PM

I think I'll play it safe and come to the game late

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What is a really, really bad idea for $400, Alex.

Sep 16, 2016, 1:12 PM

... "plane he built himself" ...

I suddenly have 2 tix for sale.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Seriously does the FAA even allow this?***

Sep 16, 2016, 1:21 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes. Kitplanes are very prevalent in the aviation industry.

Sep 16, 2016, 1:30 PM

There's even a huge experimental aircraft convention.

https://www.eaa.org/en/airventure

I'd hop in a fellow's homebuilt before I'd get into a cessna with a shoddy maint logbook. The builder knows every nut, bolt, and screw and where everything is.

Re: Yes. Kitplanes are very prevalent in the aviation industry.

Sep 16, 2016, 2:13 PM

"Eighty-two people in the U.S. were killed in 2008 in accidents involving planes built from kits, according the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's safety foundation. Kit-built planes accounted for 18 percent of noncommercial plane accidents that year even though they logged less than 5 percent of the flight time, the foundation said."

here is the warning should you find yourself facing the possibility of getting on such an aircraft:

Sep 16, 2016, 2:42 PM [ in reply to Yes. Kitplanes are very prevalent in the aviation industry. ]

I couldn't agree more. After spending most of my life around aviation, including numerous hour of Hangar Time, I would most definitely trust a homebuilt. They go through a rigorous certification inspection, and then like all planes are subject to a very thorough Annual Inspection. Like Adam said the guy that built this thing (actually an RV6 a proven kit with thousands sold) knows this plane backwards and forwards. So the only question would be, is he a competent person to assemble this plane. So I checked his resume:

Clark holds a Master of Science Degree in Management (Marketing) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management (M.I.T.); a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T.; and further studies in Global Leadership and Senior Management Development programs at the University of Michigan and Indiana University

So yea, the guy has a BS in electrical engineering from MIT. I'm good to climb in the passenger seat with him.

I'm going to watch it outside the stadium, then I will go in.

If you are to believe the misplaced modifier ...

Sep 16, 2016, 1:28 PM [ in reply to What is a really, really bad idea for $400, Alex. ]

Not only did he build the plane himself, he built it over Memorial Stadium.

That is pretty impressive.

Sep 16, 2016, 1:29 PM

Yes, very interesting. I caught that as well. I assume SCSTATE does not pay for any of the fuel for any of this. They sure don't have the money to spend on it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You noticed the misplaced modifier too.

it clearly states that this is a "special event". I think building an airplane on the air would be very special....

Wouldn't knock him, he went to MIT, prob knows more about planes and physics than most the guys building them for a living.

Re: FB Update: SC State president will fly plane over Death Valley on Saturday

Sep 16, 2016, 2:18 PM

Rv6 is one of the best experimental home built aircraft you can build yourself. Fully aerobatic, fast and burns less full than similar size aircraft that are FAA certified. The plane still has to be checked out before it can fly. The company is Vans Aircraft. Many of the non military flyovers we've had were vans aircraft flying formation. Many fly every weekend into Clemson fwiw.

"SC State President James E. Clark will lead the pre-game flight in an aircraft that he built over Memorial Stadium..."

Was the plane factory in the sky??? :)

Re: FB Update: SC State president will fly plane over Death Valley on Saturday

Sep 16, 2016, 3:01 PM

before you all fill 3 pages poking fun at the guy, he has a more impressive background than all of us...

"Clark holds a Master of Science Degree in Management (Marketing) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management (M.I.T.); a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from M.I.T.; and further studies in Global Leadership and Senior Management Development programs at the University of Michigan and Indiana University."

not to mention leading $1billion divisions of fortune 500 companies...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

think they just did a test flight

Sep 16, 2016, 3:46 PM

4 little planes in formation just went over campus west to east

they are small planes, to say the least

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple answer...

Sep 16, 2016, 6:04 PM

the idea was floated as a good will gesture for continued unity through state university partnerships, vetted by CU and all integral departments, then given approval by appropriate decision makers...

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not to mention John Denver

Sep 17, 2016, 7:55 AM

And he thought it was an excellent idea.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: FB Update: SC State president will fly plane over Death Valley on Saturday

Sep 16, 2016, 10:15 PM

Clemson nor SC state is paying a dime for this. They are doing it on their own accord and all practice flying formation religiously. I know this because my wife's father is flying his rv-8 that he built in this group tomorrow.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i am not concerned where he built it

Sep 17, 2016, 5:21 AM

Just that he did build it.

Sure hope it doesn't leak oil
