Will Spiers is doing his job

Nov 22, 2019, 8:01 AM

As long as he gets the ball off and out quickly, no blocks, which he has done. And as long as he averages about 40 yards with little or no return, which he and his coverage team has done. Dale Hatcher, he ain’t but Will Spiers is the best we got and doing a #### good job. Now let’s go block a punt against the great chicken punter next week which is doable!

point for mentioning dale hatcher

Nov 22, 2019, 8:05 AM

Dale Hatcher (born April 5, 1963) is a former American football punter for the Los Angeles Rams and the Miami Dolphins of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Clemson University

In 1985, Hatcher was named Pro Bowl and AP All Pro First Team. His blocked punt decided the first overtime regular-season NFL game to be decided by a safety. On November 5, 1989 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Hatcher helped end the game as he tried to punt, only to have it blocked by Minnesota Vikings linebacker Mike Merriweather to give the Vikings a 23–21 win over the Rams. Teammate Jim Everett threw for the only three touchdowns of the game for the Rams as the Vikings' only other points were Rich Karlis' record-tying seven field goals.

After his professional football career ended, Hatcher took a job working at Freightliner Custom Chassis in Gaffney, South Carolina.

fun fact

Nov 22, 2019, 8:38 AM

I played little league football in Gaffney and one night after practice Dale Hatcher was out there and booming punts to us...never caught one bc I was 9 or 10 years old and those things were coming down like missiles.

Exactly...he is clearly the best we've got or he wouldn't be

on the field. I would rather our coaches keep recruiting Watsons, Lawrences, Etiennes, Higgins, etc, instead of Colquitts. That strategy seems to be working well for us.

Re: Exactly...he is clearly the best we've got or he wouldn't be

Nov 22, 2019, 8:21 AM

So if we recruited a great punter we would not be able to recruit the Watsons, Lawrences, Etiennes or Higgins? Please explain that logic.

It would seem that punting would be the one football skill that would be most easily recognizable in a high school kid.

There are few, if any factors differentiating what a kid can do as a HS senior from what he should be able to do as a college freshman.

punters when we got him. They are saving him for the playoffs w new red shirt rule since he is also a backup kickoff guy. So I guess they feel no need to replace Spiers at this point

He's doing a really bad job

In techno bowl. Keeps picking tampa bay for some reason.

Oddly, even when we had Hatcher, Wake Forest’s punter

Nov 22, 2019, 8:48 AM

Wake Forest’s Punter had a better average

His name was Harry Newsome and he was drafted by The Steelers.

He had a season where he averaged 45.3 yards per punt.

Amazingly, I believe he was actually from the same HS as Hatcher.

Re: Oddly, even when we had Hatcher, Wake Forest’s punter

Nov 22, 2019, 9:22 AM

It is a well-known fact that altitude affects flight patterns.

We play in a valley and therefore the lower altitude means we can't ever punt as far.

P.S. Please ignore BT Potter and Spencer Benton when checking the facts on the above information.

You are correct!

I’m confused. ESPN says he is averaging 42.6 ypp. But he

Nov 22, 2019, 8:54 AM

isn’t on the NCAA rankings. Why would that be? 42.6 would be around 50th in ypp. And I know it’s more than the stat line but that SEEMS serviceable. Certainly doesn’t scream “I’m terrible.” And of course the difference between the 50th ranked punter and a top 20 punter is 2 yards per kick.

On his punts that are fair caught, probably under 40 yards.

Nov 22, 2019, 9:31 AM

But in his favor, very few of his punts are ever returned.

Most are fair caught or downed.

Check him out on net yards per punt - over 40 - ranked 32nd.

Re: Will Spiers is doing his job

Nov 22, 2019, 9:01 AM

Heck yeah he is! I blame Clemson sports writers for the negativity Will and the other specialists receive. I bet if it weren't for them, the specialists would get allot more love and respect.

We are near the bottom of FBS in spectial teams efficiency

Nov 22, 2019, 9:21 AM

(yet again). This is big boy football so i think it's fair to point out the team's shortcomings. And given that we are near the bottom in STE year in and year out, it's probably fair to put some of the blame on the staff as well.

Generally we are able to overcome the ST deficiencies, but deficiencies they are all the same.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We are near the bottom of FBS in spectial teams efficiency

Nov 22, 2019, 10:00 AM

STE = Special TEAMS efficiency. What, specifically, do you see in Spiers' performance that makes you want to hang that on him as an individual player? Because you know his name?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh it's absolutely not just him

Nov 22, 2019, 11:23 AM

We are also very bad at FG kicking and punt and kickoff returns. The only thing we are consistently good at on ST is kick coverage.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

seems to be going for hang time and no return more than distance. but maybe it just looks that way

He's definitely doing THE job - he's punting the football (except that one time). I'll leave it at that.

Nov 22, 2019, 10:11 AM

He could punt it 60 yards in the air, and he could send one a mile high from the 40 and land it inside the five.

Great, great weapon!

Kind of confused about this.....Do you mean he is doing “His Job” for us or for them.....hard for me to tell sometimes who he is working for out there......Go Tigers!!!!!

Re: Will Spiers is doing his job

Nov 22, 2019, 12:27 PM

he's not doing a great at his job, but sure, he's doing his job.

there's not much return yardage because a lot of his kicks are shorter than normal, so the coverage team can get there quickly. let's not pretend like his inconsistency isn't a big deal.
