ESPN sat on this story for 10 days....

..obviously they didn't want it to overshadow the game they had built up to be the game of the century. Then yesterday they put up "breaking news" bulletins all over sportscenter about this. First off they didn't follow up on the girlfriend and then sit on it to protect their interest in the game. The game turns out to be a dud and the star of ND turns out to be either a liar or just really really weird.

after that. I think the OP is stating that ESPN knew about this and sat on it until another outlet reported it. And sitting on the story does help ESPN because they broadcast the national title game.
