Duke football

Sep 7, 2012, 11:34 AM

HAHAHA...no seriously, Duke football...hahahah...ok, let me try again. Is there any reason why Duke can't bring their program up to the level of say, Northwestern. I mean, they are similar school academically and Northwestern always has a sneaking good team that pulls a few upsets and generally doesn't embarrass themselves. Is that too much to ask from Duke?

Easy explanation. They don't care.***

Can't we make them care

Sep 7, 2012, 11:45 AM

I don't know, kidnapp Coach K, and refuse to return him until they win at least 4 conference games, or something like that.

Very true, although some alums do. Back in the 70's, Duke

Sep 7, 2012, 12:06 PM [ in reply to Easy explanation. They don't care.*** ]

tried to leave the ACC in football so they could go I-AA, but the league said no partial members. So Duke decided to stop trying in football, a trend which continued until just a few years ago. They have put a lot of money into football in recent years, mainly through improvements to Wallace Wade- fan amenities, a sports medicine facility, and, for the first time ever, locker rooms at the stadium. Another sign that at least some alums and fans do care is that they hired Cutcliffe. They just can't get the same players that we can, rather like the military academies. Maybe they should be like Navy and hire a guy like Paul Johnson (his next stop?) who would bring in an unusual offense. That could give them a fighting chance in most ACC games.

"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs—Victory in spite of all terror—Victory, however long and hard the road may be..." - Winston Churchill

2 ACC wins in two years, and 6 in the 4 years

Sep 7, 2012, 12:08 PM

Not looking like they care much.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Northwestern is not Duke

Sep 7, 2012, 11:46 AM

They have a pretty solid program and have only missed a bowl game 3 or 4 times the past 10 or so years.

Duke has been getting better, but they have a long way to go.

I don't see your point, my point is that there is no reason why Duke can't be like Northwestern.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure of your point

Sep 7, 2012, 11:49 AM

Duke hired a pretty good coach and has put millions into their football program. Northwestern is already there and has been for a while now.

Duke will make headlines this week when they beat Stanford!!

Sep 7, 2012, 11:52 AM

not likely, but hey, anything can happen!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Duke hired a retread working on his 7th heart attack

Sep 7, 2012, 11:54 AM [ in reply to I'm not sure of your point ]

They suck, stop defending them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You must not watch much football.

Sep 7, 2012, 11:57 AM

Duke is clearly better now than before they hired Cutcliffe. If you can't see that, I can't help you. It doesn't happen overnight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They have won 2 ACC games in 2 years

Sep 7, 2012, 12:03 PM

Their best season was in 2009, but they didn't seem to build on that. I know it doesn't happen overnight but what about in 4 years, a little progress maybe?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

wasn't that the year that duke beat a tommy bowden coached

Sep 7, 2012, 12:08 PM

team? thanks tommy!

Re: Duke football

Sep 7, 2012, 12:49 PM

The only way to Duke care about football is to allocate school payouts based on how schools bring in. Then they would realize football brings in about 70% (in tv money) compared to 30% basketball.
