Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 3:28 PM

May not be a popular sentiment, but he's the only question I have on this D back-end. He's stellar against the run, but my stomach knots up when I see him dropping back into coverage. More concerned against LSU. But he hasn't been great at any point this season.

Dude, he's a third team All-American...

Dec 16, 2019, 3:36 PM

None of the rest of our back four made AA.

Tanner Muse is just fine when he is not forced outside his skillset. He is not a cover-corner.

That some teams scheme against him is more of a statement of other weaknesses in the D. Muse can't cover everything.

Of course every player has weaknesses ... real question is

Dec 16, 2019, 8:59 PM

... do their strengths outweigh those weaknesses?

Tanner Muse is a starter on an undefeated team for a reason.

Incredible actually.

Pretty sure Saban had his whole team out there.

He holds qbs to a 43% completion rate when thrown his way and has 4 picks. He is arguably the best safety in the ACC. I have seen him be beat on short yardage situations on play action and i have seen him be beat playing 1 on 1 with the other teams best wr.

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 3:53 PM

Teams make a point to go after Muse because he's super aggressive. He sometimes bites a little early or goes for the INT instead of coverage etc but he's not a bad player by any means and he's actually someone who I love to watch. He's fast as they come, hit harder than probably any DB in CFB and is willing to put it all on the line for the team, people are just critical of him because a few missed assignments like pretending it's his fault he didn't keep up with Jeudy on a deep ball (nobody does) and he was about 3 inches away last year from having 3 picks that turned into TDs. He's a ballsy player and those risks bite him sometimes but I am going to miss him a ton.

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 4:01 PM

I like T. Muse. I just think he needs to remain in a fifteen yard radius of the line of scrimmage. He does not need to be covering wide receivers. He is a good player within limits.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 4:22 PM

I hear he doesn’t throw a very good deep ball and his leg is suspect from the right hash as well. He’s a tackling machine, a stellar run-stuffing safety, what do you want ???

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 4:37 PM [ in reply to Re: Tanner Muse ]

If he's in coverage it's because the CB messed up which is his job as a safety of course. But because you see his number last it tends to look like he's just gotten dominated on the play and blew it.

He is statistically one of the best coverage safeties in the ACC.

me too...and I liked boulware being on our team and on the field even though he was hyper aggressive, and thus prone to some mistakes. and he wasn't the fastest guy on the field. I guess some on here didnt care much for boulware as much as you and me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He performs just fine ...

Dec 16, 2019, 4:01 PM

in man coverage against bigger slots and tight ends in addition to playing closer to the line of scrimmage in an attacking role. However, covering speedy little receivers who tend to bait him with double moves is NOT his forte.

Re: He performs just fine ...

Dec 16, 2019, 9:06 PM

So he gets beat on half of the coverage schemes and against fast WRs? Isn’t that like more than 60% of situations he is in?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you think someone would get PT with a grade of 40% ?

Dec 16, 2019, 9:58 PM

I would love to see Tanner’s grades this season. I bet he’s 90+ % this year.

A safety matched up against a good, speedy WR is a mismatch in any league with any safety. Tell me who a shut down safety is in the nfl? Corners are the only ones you put man on a good WR and expect them to not get beat.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He performs just fine ...

There is a reason he is an All-American and you are at 43% pulse!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 4:19 PM

I think BV addressed this post-ACCFCG. Teams know Muse may struggle vs speedy WR (remember the Jeudy TD in the NCG last year). So they scheme plays to make it Muse vs WR. But it is Clemson's job to counter-scheme to get out of that coverage. And in the ACC game Clemson missed making those adjustments early. As the game went on, corrections were made.

All teams will do that. Just like OSU will try to catch Clemson blocking Chase Young with ETN only. That gets ugly fast. So Clemson has to scheme to chip him with a TE or H-back and get some help from inside or roll away to opposite side.

The game within the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 9:14 PM

Didn’t they bench him in the second quarter and sit him in forth? Seems that adjustment worked.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How many starters played in the 4th against UVA?

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 4:22 PM

Thrilled we have him back there. We need him vs the run and he has a lot on his plate helping our DL that has issues.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 9:15 PM

But again - he plays safety. Not DL.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Dec 16, 2019, 10:00 PM

Their run support? It helps support our DL in stopping the run.

After the Wake game Muse had the second highest grad for a safety in the nation for the year with a 90.8 on PFF. Seems pretty good to me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 8:03 PM

Sometimes BV puts him in a tough situation hoping that the rush will get home. Sometimes it works and no one notices what Tanner contributed. Sometimes it doesn't and it sort of stands out.
Both of our safeties are excellent.

Re: Let’s see how you feel when we face tOSU power run game.***

Dec 17, 2019, 7:53 AM

I am nervous because he is going to get isolated in the pass game because we are going to spy Fields, OSU WRs are 3 deep and they motion a lot creating the mismatches that we are all quietly (or in some people’s case) not so quietly concerned with. We got exposed against VA. The first quarter and Muse didn’t have a great game. We benched him and the defense settled down.

Not worries about OSU running game. Just Muse

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume

Dec 17, 2019, 8:28 AM

that you’re *not* just trying to see how many people you can pi$$ off in one thread.

My final question for you ...

Given your assessment and your concerns ... can you explain why professional sports writers would consider Tanner Muse one of the top 4-6 players at his position in the entire nation this year.

They had dozens of safeties to choose from, but for some reason, All-America voters selected Tanner Muse at Safety.

Why was that?

A bunch of Clemson’s great players were passed over at other positions, but Tanner Muse was singled out as a national-level talent for 2019.

How did that happen? What’s your explanation?

Only problem with TM is he bites on the double move. Problem is he is the last line of D.

Re: Tanner Muse

Dec 16, 2019, 11:13 PM

fortunately you don't judge football talent for a living.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

IMO when Tanner Muse ends up 1 on 1 with an elite WR

Dec 17, 2019, 8:42 AM

(think Jeudy last year on Bama's 2nd drive) it's more of a scheme failure, and not really his fault. His strengths and weaknesses are well known and the only time's he's really a liability is when he's a) trying to cover a WR down the seam with no help, and b) completely isolated near the boundary trying to make a 1 on 1 tackle in space. I can live with B... we've seen him miss some 1 on 1 tackles near the LOS that resulted in ~10 yard gains and 1st downs, but IMO it's OK for that to happen occasionally. What's NOT OK is having Muse running 1 on 1 with Deebo Samuel, Jerry Juedy, etc deep down the middle of the field with absolutely no help. We've seen those result in 1 play 75 yard TD drives.

Muse is awesome making plays in the box, and he's also been effective dropping back in more of a cover 2 look. Muse is absolutely not slow, he just doesn't turn and change directions well.
