I know Hot Rod is not the best back in Clemson history

but he does everything well. The blitzes he picked up all night will land him on an NFL roster.
He holds onto the ball and he's always moving forward rarely getting TFL.
He's not as explosive as CJ or Ellington but he is solid.

he's the first one hugging everyone after a play. He's always in Tajh's face after an offensive series with his arm around him. His skill set is not the X factor, his character is. He's a guy that you can't build a program around but you can't build a program without him. He's an MVP in ways that aren't measured in stats.

he's got a little too much Jamie Harper in him. He may get on a roster, but I don't see him as a productive NFL back. I'd love for him to prove me wrong though.

He will need to pack on a few more pounds to have a chance at getting consistent playing time. He also throws down some of the sickest juke moves you'll see. And he stoned that one Tech LB hard on a big pass play. Stoning an NFL LB like that is a little harder though. I will certainly cheer for him to succeed in the NFL, just like I cheer for CJ and AE.

but a ton of guys have made long, lucrative careers as 3rd down backs. McDowell has the ideal skill set for that. Excellent in pass protection, has decent hands out of the backfield, and has enough giddy-up to make the draw play a viable threat.

Lacks the fight for yards mentality that a workhorse back needs. I remember watching the Saints 3rd stringer get put in against Dallas and I was like _ _ _ _ that guy wants those yards bad. That's the kind of back he needs to become. Other than that his skill set is great.

That 3rd stringer is Ingram who has a history of being soft and did against a backup defense that had quit playing hard.

That 3rd string back you refer to on the Saints roster was Mark Ingram, former Heisman trophy winner. If Hot Rod has to become that to make an NFL roster, then most college backs are SOL.

But I'm sorry, there will be no NFL rosters in his future. Fortunately he has been led by a staff that has taught him there's a life after college football and how to handle it.

I know he is third string for a reason. That night it looked like he was playing twister to try to gain an extra yard or two. AE was that type of guy but hot rod just isn't.

He is a great back. A lot of college teams would run him to death. We are just lucky enough not to have to depend on him getting 30 touches a game. Impossible to predict how anyone will do in the NFL.
