Does it bother you being called a Tater by a Coot?

Nov 15, 2019, 10:34 PM

Ha.. they probably wouldn't last a month trying to grow food or milk cows if their Football Team depended on it!

Wait!

Taters are good....eat them almost every other day....

Nov 15, 2019, 10:41 PM

...coots probably like them too. What's to be mad about?

Just had one under some tasty chili. Perfect for the weather. Tater doesn’t bother me in the least.

Yep, and they would starve if schools like Clemson wasn't in existence, wouldn't they. BC of schools like Clemson that help educate and produce great future farmers in America, they can ask us, would you like Lettuce, Tomato, and pickle on your Whopper, and would you like taters with that!!! Just don't confuse them by asking for Grey Poupon Dijon Mustard, bc if you do, you will have to go inside to get your entire order straighten out!!!

It's really a pretty funny rivalry dig - but if "Tater" is the worst we get from a team named "K-o-k-x-x" - then I'm not bothered.

I don't care what they say bc I can call them losers, and they can't say that about us. So I think that name calling by them is really irrelevant with their history being what it is!!!

My favorite conversation about a “tater” was actually from an ex-coot Coach...

Nov 16, 2019, 6:17 AM

Dave DeGuglielmo, or Coach Goog for short, use to be an o-line coach for the coots during the Holtz days.

Many years ago he did some radio appearances with Teddy Hefner in Columbia. One day a coot called in and started talking crap about the taters. Tater this, tater that. Coach Goog lets the guy speak then when he hangs up immediately ask Teddy “what is a tater?” And here’s how it basically goes down...

Teddy: “Oh, that’s a derogatory nickname Carolina fans gave Clemson fans. Instead of calling them Tigers they call them taters.

Coach Goog: “Why taters?”

Teddy: “You know... they are an agricultural school. So they are nothing but a bunch of farmers in USC fans’ eyes.”

And here comes the best part...

Coach Goog: “That doesn’t make any sense. We don’t even grow potatoes in this state. Hey, I live In Prosperity on the lake... that doesn’t mean I’m a sailor. That nickname is just stupid. They need to come up with something better than that.”

I was laughing my head off at Coach’s response!!! It was a good day.

Doesn’t bother me at all. I always tell them don’t hate the tater, hate the game. Or don’t be a tater hater.

I first heard it from a coot guy I knew referring to basketball coach Tates Locke back in the mid seventies. He always called him Tater Locke. He was a funny guy and hard core coot. I actually believe he coined the phrase.

So, if I understand your question correctly, you're asking if I get upset when....

A) a hill-billy game-tard who lives in a trailer park and delivers pizzas for a living calls me "tater"?

B) a provincial wanna-be big city elitist from a 3rd-rate small-dumpy-city calls me "tater"?

Nope.
