Does anyone think Cornell Powell starts day one?

Man that kid is good. Straight up jaw dropper on the football field. Great personality too, so glad he decided to come here. For my $ there is not a better player in this class. Will have my popcorn ready for the spring game.

Yes, as a kick returner, and rotating at wr by mid season. He will be special.

Spring Game? Pretty sure he's not an early enrollee

Which is also the reason that I don't think he's starts day one. Most of our freshman starters in the latest season enrolled early in 2015.

I think Dexter Lawrence is the most freakish guy who will be a "co-starter" after the spring.

Can't argue or complain about that
Not being an early enrollees changes my thinking. Whenever he figures it out he's gonna be a go to guy imo. Just so naturally talented. I didn't think it was possible to go recruit WR's that are more talented than Sammy, Nuk, and M Bryant, but Powell is so dang good it's hard to not think he's better. #Baller

Quick question on Powell. Wasn't Overton rated higher than him?I know that's not indicative of on the field performance. The consensus on here is that powell is a better player.

Powell is polished and is a better product right now. His body is more filled out and he has better skills. Overton is more about upside. If he adds another 20 to his frame and works hard on his 50/50 skills he is going to be scary.

Alert for what?
I'm aware of all of the guys you mentioned. Cornell Powell is more talented than any of them. Pretty sure our coaches think so too. So if that opinion puts me on alerts with the tent mafia losers then no prob man.

Chances are good he's never had to block seriously in his life. That will change under Jeff Scott.

Apex, with all due respect, because I respect your opinion
This kid shows so much dexterity in everything he does that learning how to block won't be as complicated as it is for others. He's also not a me first guy.
So, let's say he learns to block, and by game 5 he has the playbook down. Starter?

I do not think he starts all season unless something happens to Williams , Cain, Scott, or Renfrow. Also do not forget Thompson it is about time for him to break out. He will be a redshirt soph next year and have heard our coaches say they think he can play at the next level.

We'll see ... we're really, really deep at the WR spot

I can certainly see Powell making a name for himself quickly as a true freshman returning KOs.
Being a great blocker as a WR is as much a matter of "want to" as it is skill and ability. A lot of HS stars have never had to do it and they're just not willing to because it's some serious grunt work.
Not knowing much about Powell's work ethic, I can't judge his willingness to give up his body on a key downfield block. I will say that (at this point) I don't believe the Clemson coaches would recruit a WR who didn't have the stuff needed to be a good blocker.
Time will tell.

I'm right there with you. That's a very measured reasonable point if view. That's why I asked for your opinion. Here's an interview from YouTube (c&p sorry)
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c96YjBhC7p0
If you get a chance check it out. Powell talks in detail about what Dabo and Jeff Scott expect from him, and Powell believes he's that guy because he knows what it takes and that's the very reason he chose Clemson. There's more to the interview than just that, and to me he just comes accross as a very mature and competent guy.
Can't wait

I'm from the same area as Renfrow and I still wouldn't disagree with this. Those 3 are elite. Hunter is good too, but he's the type that will excel in a reserve role.

We're so stacked that they will work him to the starting lineup eventually. He will have to go off in games and earn it that way imo from what I have seen from Dabo.

Good post. Can't argue with that. Obv I think he's good enough to go off, but even if he did go off and they didn't start him it's not a big deal. He's gonna return kicks so it would be ideal for him to take the 1st couple plays off.
My honest opinion would be that he will be a better version of Deon Cain as a freshman. MW, A Scott, and Renfrow will more than likely start and will tire out the defense, then our OC's will look to simply exploit tired legs and mismatches with Powell, Cain, and Ray-Ray. The first unit is steady and really good, but the second provides more big play potential.
Btw, Deshaun Watson is throwing them the ball.

Cain was a 5 star by every service
He's good, but to say a better version of Cain, who put up what 600 yards of offense, and scored in what 6 straight games, burning guys deep.
It took Cain a while to get his feet wet, from playing Wb is hs. But no one can keep up with This man, and his routes are silky smooth

But you have him better than Cain, already?
That's like me having Cain better than Sammy, already.
Based off what??
In due time, he will get his time to shine. Let's not understate , or overstate.

> But you have him better than Cain, already?
Not necessarily, but it is certainly plausible. I'll explain.
> That's like me having Cain better than Sammy, > already.
No it's not. Sammy had 1450 yards from scrimmage, with 12 td's, and was a 1st team All-American as a true freshman. He left college early, was a first round draft pick, and is already a pro bowl caliber receiver.
Whereas Deon Cain is a talented sophomore misfit receiver that showed big play ability when he wasn't in trouble.
My statement is plausable, your comparison is ridiculous.
Based off what??
Based off the fact that Deon Cain was 6'2, 195, ran a 4.42, was a QB in High School, and even though he had to learn to be a receiver he still made big plays.
Cornell Powell on the other hand is 6'2, 205, runs a 4.42, was a stud receiver/db/return man in HS, and was head and shoulders above anyone in a talented shrine bowl class. He is proficient in everything he does because he has smarts to go with his physical ability. He's also more grown-up than Deon Cain. You never know what the future holds, but given the fact that they are a wash in physical ability, Powell has played WR his entire life, a better version of DW4 will be throwing him the ball, and he's more mature how could you not forecast him better. All the signs are there, you just have to read them.
> In due time, he will get his time to shine. Let's not > understate , or overstate.
Not overstating anything. Cornell Powell is the truth, you shall see.

Just what is in front of him. A lot of Sunday talent there already that knows the system, has DW4's confidence and has experience. That said, I see him coming in a lot early and often. I would love for him to get a good taste along with Overton this season, get in the weight room, learn the system, and then next season when I feel we will probably have a mass exodus on offense, be ready to step right up. Just my opinion.

He's not an early enrollee, so he won't participate in the spring game. But unless Sammy Watkins cut his dreads and showed up to camp wearing Cornell's stuff, he's not starting day 1. He's good and I think will be a great receiver and return man but he's not starting over Williams, Scott, Renfrow or Cain day 1.

Can't argue with that, and like I said, if he doesn't start it doesn't matter. He's gonna be on the field, and if he takes over he will get the ball. No favorites on this team because we have great leadership. That's evidenced by the fact G Hop has had games where he was the go to guy because he was the mismatch and he was catching the ball that day.

Probably not: Mike Williams, Artavis, Cain, McCloud, Renfrow, Thompson
Jan 19, 2016, 7:24 PM

You've got a lot of guys who are gonna work hard and block/know how to run routes. Powell is gifted but he seems to have only run two routes in high school.
I think on the first offensive play vs Auburn we will see Mike Williams, Deon Cain, and Artavis Scott at WR. I do think Powell will be a factor at PR and KOR.

I do think Powell will be a factor at PR and KOR.
You make a fair point on the route running, I did notice that too

My opinion on Clemson Tiger Football, along with other various topics. Thought that was clear, but I'm happy to clarify. Hope you are having a good day.

Why do you think he is that much better than Overton? Just wondering.

By no means do I think Overton is a slouch. He has incredible talent as well, but he's thin, and stronger more developed db's will be able to jam him at the line imo. He's going to be just fine, and they will compliment each other well because they are a lot different. I do think Powell is a better talent, but I wouldn't say it's by a lot. I would just say Powell is more ready.
Here's a video of him at the opening. He has a lot to learn, but if other teams try to jam him this will give you an idea about his potential big play ability.
