Which is stupid. College football remains the only sport in the world where several teams have literally a 0% to win the title.

Would they make it of we had an 8 team playoff?

maybe if they had the group of 5 automatic qualifier

(But then how would that be decided between them and a potentially unbeaten Boise State)
But if there was no qualifier then I bet not. People would rather have a 2 loss SEC team in there

Boise lost to BYU last weekend

But the point is still valid. The committee would likely have to select one G5 team, and there isn't a great way to do that if there are multiple unbeaten G5s.

If a team like SMU is put into the playoff, you are taking a team out of likely the #4 spot that will have a 60/40 chance to beat the #1 team.
The SMU team would likely be predicted around 90/10 or 80/20 at best.
That is why these teams don't get a real shot to get into a 4 team playoff.
It's essentially a bye for the top team to get to the national championship.

Several teams? I'd say 100 out of 130 never have a shot.

of beating any of the top 4 teams. I don’t even think a Kirby Smart coached team would lose to them.

I think you are underestimating the power of a Smart team to identify the path to defeat....

*Yes*
But for that to happen, you need to have several "top" teams go 10-3 or 11-2 and basically not have more than 1 or two at 11-2. Basically, the entire CFP race would need to pull an ACC Coastal move and just eat each other.
It *could* happen - see 2007 (BC 10-3 ACC champ, 11-3 Oklahoma, 11-2 Ohio State, 12-1 LSU, 11-2 USC).

The American Athletic currently has a higher conference ranking than the ACC however they still have no legitimate shot. Two loss SEC teams, two loss Big 10 teams, maybe even 2 loss Big 12, one loss ACC, and loss Pac 10 teams would all be ahead of them. Almost impossible for 4 of the above not to occur.

Interesting to see if committee would take undefeated SMU over two loss p5 conference champion? (Note SMU has one p5 win over TCU). Or would it have to be a three loss p5 team?

American has a champ game right? Wouldn't they be 13-0 then?
Either way, no they have no shot. Which to one of the commentor's points, yes this is what is wrong with CFB. A 130-team league is too big to manage. 13-people committees are better than pure computer formula or regional sportswriters. But every other sport at every other level a champ is decided on the field/track/course/court/pitch/water. There is no debating who plays cupcakes or whose schedule is what. You win and you're in.

Not so fast, my friend. There definitely IS debating who played a cupcake schedule in college hoops. Same thing with college baseball. As for football, it's within the conference play that "things are settled on the field."
