Doctor Jerry Punch ... why does a guy with a microphone on

Oct 11, 2015, 3:17 PM

the sidelines of college football games need to flaunt the fact that he has an MD?

I know, I know ... he "earned" the title.

Just seems a tad bit pretentious.

Almost like he's saying:

"Hey! Look at me! ... Even though I got this sweet gig as a sideline commentator with ESPN and I'm making great money just strolling around running my yap, y'all need to understand, I'm better than all this. In real life, I'm a doctor and don't forget that!

he worked as a MD for NASCAR races right?***

I believe that's the correct title for a doctor, regardless of occupation. Why you mad, brah?

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not mad, just think it's pretentious.

Oct 11, 2015, 3:28 PM

If it helps his self esteem, to flaunt the title in a sportscasting environment, then good for him.

According to his bio, he has spent almost no time in his entire career as a practicing physician.

It's not pretentious. It's a degree he warned and, furthermore, it's his proper title. Do you REALLY give two $hyatts?

Oct 11, 2015, 3:43 PM

No, actually I don't care all that much.

Just stating an opinion.

My dad was an MD and practiced medicine all his life.

If he'd gone into some other line of work after earning his MD, I really cannot see him insisting on being called "Doctor" even though it was his right.

Because, he wasn't a pretentious person.

I think your opinion is based on a misplaced understanding of when it is and isn't appropriate to address someone as "Doctor". It has nothing to do with whether you are an active, practicing, medical MD or otherwise. It is a title bestowed to any individual that happens to earn the degree, nothing more or less. To say it's "pretentious", in my opinion, is juvenile and/or rooted in some kind of insecurity.

Anyway, you're entitled to your opinion, but if an individual earned a degree- regardless of whether he is an active practicing professional or not- then their title should reflect it.

Well, there you go ... we both have opinions. Cheers.***

This argument always bugs me. If you've received a doctorate, no matter your profession, you've earned the right to put Dr. in front of your name.

I always like it when doctors tell me to call them by their first name. It makes them much more personable.

I haven't seen any footage, but if they are simply referring to him as Dr. on the broadcast, there is no pretentiousness there...I try to hide that I'm an MD when out and about because I don't want people to ask me medical questions all #### day, but in the office I do expect my patients to call my doctor, because that's what I am. I'm not their pal. you don't want your doc to be a professional, treat him that way. As for this guy, yeah he's earned it. If you want to ##### about someone being a hack, look no further than all those TV docs, including Dr. Oz. can't stand that guy. spreads so much information!

You assume he's "flaunting it"

Oct 11, 2015, 4:58 PM

Some employers want their employees titles prominently displayed. He has been called Doc for decades going back to his work as a pit road reporter and he earned it. Why is it flaunting when you earn it.... False humility 'oh don't call me that' is almost as bad as dogging somebody for being called by their earned title.
