Danny Pearman is an excellent SPT Cordinator

Jan 14, 2016, 2:18 PM

We are a little spoiled these days.
He's turned 2 walk-on nobody kickers into dependable guys you can count on for anything inside 45 yards
Catman was one, and Hugel is the other. Hugel has an NFL future in 3 years too- don't forget he was a true freshman this year.
Lakip was actually recruited and earned a scholarship from the get go, so I didn't include him in this, but was solid until his off field problems.
Our return team isn't good and honestly hasn't been good all season, but it's 10% scheme and 90% want to....
These guys didn't want to... Plain and simple Kearse hated playing SPT, and it showed when people constantly ran by him. One of the best guys we had was McCullough, another was Lakip. Those two guys were big on KOR coverage. If you want to blame someone for the loss to Bama blame the 3 selfish potheads that weren't there when we needed them because smoking dope was more important than the team... Simple as that.
Dabo makes the call not to touchback, he doesn't like giving the 5 yards that come from the spot change a few years ago.
Hugel and Lakip both had the ability to kick it deep, Dabo refused to believe that we would give up a big play on KOR after the Lousiville game.
He made changes then, and another change after the NC ST game. He was sure it was fixed. It was not.
A lot of people don't like walk-ons and back ups playing KOR but it's what they specialize in, their only chance to see the field most times, so they give it 110%.
This was not Pearman, again it was Dabo.
******I don't argue with a man that has done what Dabo has done for Clemson, so just look at it like this.******
Alabama has 5** guys even at KOR coverage, they out blocked us, and out efforted us, and their 5* RB ran faster than our guys. Alabama was better in nearly every spot on the field talent wise (except QB) and Clemson out played them 80% of plays ran on both sides based on heart and want to.
Reader said it best after the game-
"These guys are 4 and 5* guys, they come from good programs, they didn't understand how important special teams are, I hope they do now...." (Loosely quoted) it's in the "Tigers come up dry in the dessert" article from after the game if you would like to see exactly what it says.
Anyway he was basically saying that effort on the KOR killed us, not scheme, not lack of coordination.

I think you would agree that lack of effort was an issue all year in that case. If that is true and it is due to a lack of effort and not of scheme then it is still up to the COACHES to put the players in there who will give us the best chance. I know what you are trying to say but none-the-less it is still a coaching fault. If they knew that player A was not putting forth the effort on ST then player A should have been removed from ST a long time ago.

So it's not on the coaches at all that we are worse at covering kicks and blocking for returns than almost everyone that plays FBS football?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

great point purple...

Jan 14, 2016, 2:32 PM

Without really knowing all the specifics and nuisances of our special teams strategies, it has become a trend to ignore special teams in most of CFB. Listening to Jacke Sherrill speak about the difference in today's game versus 20 years ago, he stated it is a total lack of coaching on special teams. He said most specialist are segregated and sort of left to themselves during practice. Not saying that's what Clemson does but rather there is a need, especially at a team as well coached and financially supported as Clemson, to place a high priority to special teams. Regardless of what we want to think, special teams played a large factor in us losing the National Championship. Time to do whatever is needed to correct this glaring area of problems.

Re: great point purple...

Jan 14, 2016, 2:39 PM

Yes, that's partly what I'm saying.
When you have starters from other phases playing SPT, they have less time to actually practice it, Kearse's future in the NFL was reliant on his ability to tackle someone on SPT, same goes for most others.
The loss of MCullough and Lakip hurt us badly. The coverage had been better since the NC ST game, not great still but better.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I blame Blanks for not cover a 3rd string TE not once...

Jan 14, 2016, 2:35 PM [ in reply to Re: Danny Pearman is an excellent SPT Cordinator ]

I blame McCullough and Lakip and Cain for smoking dope- 2 of those guys have come up big on KOR.

But mostly I am just happy that we were #1 for 8 straight weeks, and that we are #2 in the final instead of 8-5 like we had been before Dabo.
We needed a few more prices than we had Monday. I refuse to believe that anyone else could instantly fix our SPT problems. Pearman has been a SPT coordinator for Alabama, VT, UNC, MARYLAND, and Duke.
He's been doing it for nearly 30 years. I just won't put the blame on him.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with most of what you are saying

Jan 14, 2016, 2:27 PM

but scheme, on the onsides kick, cost us the game. Until that point, we had dominated. Even tied, you felt like their D was worn down and we would get the ball back and drive. Alabama's coaches realized their was a weakness in our scheme and turned the game around by exploiting it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pearman is up in the box and if he can't see the problems

Jan 14, 2016, 2:27 PM

from there, communicate them so that staff can understand the problems and resolve in practice, and lay a heavy hand in getting them fixed as the ST Coordinator, then show him the door. He's also a poor recruiter. He's not bringing in our TE's. Other coaches are. And, for that matter, as good as our starting TE's have been the last few years, we could probably get more from them in the blocking and route running areas.

Nothing you said explains being 126 out of 128 FCS schools in Special Teams Efficiency.

What ever we are doing is NOT working.

Bottom line...We need to get better. Turn this glaring weakness into a strength and we will be hard to beat. That's what Champions do and I expect this staff to get it done.

Now let's go do it!

If Pearman is responsible for Huegel's success, who is responsible for Spence's apparent lack of development?

I really don't care what the answer is, Huegel is the man.

Go Tigers!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

good TE coach, terrible on SPT...

Jan 14, 2016, 2:48 PM

Are biggest problem on SPT is alignment on kickoffs and returns. Our alignment on kickoffs which has been the same all year, allowed Drake to have so much room when he cut back to the right side of the field on his TD return. Only had two defenders on the side Drake cut back too. Same thing on the onsides kick, we had no one close to the ball because the alignment on the side of the field Bama kicked to has our return team too close to the middle of the field

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good special teams coaching doesn't lead to being 126th

Jan 14, 2016, 2:54 PM

of of 128 FBS teams in special teams efficiency. If we had enough talent to put highly ranked offensive and defensive units on the field, we sure as heck had enough talent to play solid special teams.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is pure BS to say that we kick off short of the goal line

Jan 14, 2016, 3:21 PM

on purpose.

That is just absolutely ridiculous on the face of it.

Oddly when Bradley Pinion was doing KOs, we didn't use this "strategy" nearly as often as we have this year.

The touch back is the most under-rated play in football.

Forcing the other team to go 75 yards every time is a huge advantage and almost every kicker capable of doing it, kicks through the end zone every time. When they don't it's because the muffed the kick.

We kick off short because we don't have a guy with the leg to do anything else. It's just that simple.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: It is pure BS to say that we kick off short of the goal line

Jan 14, 2016, 9:30 PM

Hue gel is great on FG's. But we need it in the end zone, everytime.

Start training. Renfrow out on and showed walk ins can do it??

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Contradiction in terms.

Jan 14, 2016, 7:45 PM

You cannot say that the Special Teams play that ranked #123 out 128 teams is players fault. It's impossible. If you have players that can't be motivated that a coaching failure. It is beyond comprehension that players who are held accountable at their respective primary positions but aren't on special teams is fantasy.

Fact, the Number 1 team in the country had among the worst special teams performances in the entire country. You can't blame players or scheme....coaches are responsible for both.

Not sure what's going to change, but if you've ever heard even a little about Dabo Swinney you know he's going to be all over it....just ask Kevin Steele.

Go Tigers

Re: Danny Pearman is an excellent SPT Cordinator

Pearlman sucks at special teams, in fact wins the second to worst trophy in special teams, TE he is great but just hire someone who knows what he is doing at that position alone; we lined up with that side open in many a game, Alabama only team with confidence enough to exploit it. How much money did that loss just lose our program; I think enough that would justify hiring an exclusive special teams coach.

You're trying to tell me Dabo called not to touchback, after that TD return and all season struggling against solid returners and garbage ones? You're out of your mind

I posted last night that the father of one of our players said that his son told him that they kicked it short so they can trap them behind the 25. I will see the player tomorrow night and I do plan to ask him and see if he tells me the same thing.

Is that why we had NOBODY in position or even close to being able to catch that onside kick by Bama.....give me a fringing break.....our special teams need to be COMPLETELY overhauled starting with the coaches.....special teams have been very weak for us for several years now and it kept us from winning the national championship this year.......Go Tigers!!!!!!
