Dabo's Win Percentage

Jul 22, 2020, 3:19 PM

Perusing Wikipedia to stave off the pre-season doldrums and stumbled upon a page about CFB HCs with winning percentages over .750.

Dabo currently sits at 130-31-0 for a winning percentage of .807 (that appears to include his 4-3 record as an interim coach; as full-time HC his percentage is actually .818). I knew it was high but didn't realize it was that good!

That actually puts him ahead of these guys:
- Bob Devaney (.806)
- Bob Stoops (.798)
- Chris Petersen (.795)
- Nick Saban (.788)
- Bear Bryant (.780)
- Bo Schembechler (.775)
- Wallace Wade (.765)
- Woody Hayes (.759)
- Jimbo Fisher (.758)
- Lloyd Carr (.753)

Granted most of these guys coached longer but still noteworthy.

FWIW, some other notable guys ahead of Dabo:
- Knute Rockne (.881)
- Frank Leahy (.864)
- Urban Meyer (.853)
- Barry Switzer (.837)
- Tom Osborne (.836)
- Pete Carroll (.836)
- Robert Neyland (.829)
- Bud Wilkinson (.826)

The highest ever is Larry Kehres who coached at Mount Union from 1986-2012 and compiled an insane 332-24-3 record for a .929 winning percentage!

Interestingly not on the list:
- Bobby Bowden - .740 overall, .760 at FSU
- Joe Paterno - .749 (just missed the cutoff)
- Danny Ford - .760 at Clemson, .664 overall
- Frank Beamer - .662
- Les Miles - .770 at LSU, .694 overall
- Gene Stallings - .810 at Bama, .613 overall
Mack Brown - .767 at Texas, .665 overall
- Lou Holtz - .651
- Steve Spurrier - he was .817 at UF, .772 overall when he left UF; the Gamecocks brought his career winning percentage down to .718!

I wonder if Danny regrets taking the Arkansas job.

Danny told us at the Savannah QB Club several years ago he thought he was a pretty good coach until he arrived at Arkansas.

Im surprised that Jeff Devanneys name hasn’t come up recently. He’s been very consistent at the small college level.

What Dabo has done is impressive.

Arkansas is in a tough spot. They’re surrounded by potential recruiting spots, but everyone that they’d compete heavily with for those recruiting spots is better than Arkansas right now. Oklahoma to the west, OU & OSU gets those guys. KC, MO, STL to the NW, N, NE, MIZZOU gets those guys. Louisville & Memphis to the east and SE. UL and Memphis are better. Texas to the south. Everybody playing D1 ball in Texas is better than Arky. Arky’s geographic potential is there, but getting over the hump against the competition is not going to be easy.
