Bowden had quite the following after West & Hatfield...i know i can only speak of coaches i've experienced myself or are iconic like Howard.
he beat the coots but blew some mind-blowers & couldn't bring home the bacon. he was very popular though & whipped daddy too! LOL
what are the other orders or suggestions?

There's no doubt in my mind that its Frank, Danny, and Dabo

In that order. Outside of Ford nd Howard, no other coach has had more success than Dabo outside of possibly Heisman and Pell.

We named our field after and the man who put us on the map. Frank Howard was a "great" of College Football.

sure can't dispute that! it was a long time ago though...

i can agree with either being first but the rock & the field & more belongs to Frank Howard, along with the lore.
everybody knows what Danny did & lots that are new to the program.
Dabo surpassed Bowden for me a long time ago (i was done with Tommy after supporting his efforts up until the last straw). funny what we've gained & traded in the process so far, but give Dabo TB-type time & we'll get something done here i believe

Coach Howard put Clemson on the map..

Shortly after he took over WWW2 struck and fielding a team at a military school was a great challenge. The record he compiled at a small military school was amazing. Most of his seasons we only played 3 or 4 home games. He and the students even sodded the field before the first game at Death Valley. As an asst coach and Head coach he went to 4 what would be BCS games now.
He was quite a guy..

Having this conversation isn't fair to either of them.

Dabo is a good coach, Dabo may be a great coach, only time will tell. Personally, I believe Dabo will be a great coach.
Danny was a football coach from helll. He knew tough. He knew hardnose and he knew football. Nobody will ever be better than Danny to me because he was Clemson's coach while I was There. Danny caught as much or more helll from Clemson Fans early in his tenure as Dabo has. He lived through it and if there's a fan that doesn't like and remember Coach Ford with affection I have heard about it.
Coach Howard is a legend.

have to pretty-much agree with you there...well said!
i wasn't in school, but i was up here during all Danny's games too. he had some enemies among fans for sure (just like Dabo does).
still neck & neck with Dabo, but i can appreciate the game & Clemson & football more since i'm a man & not a child during his tenure...was just a crazy Clemson fan kid when Danny was coaching.
i obviously only know some history & stories of Frank Howard...RIP

Probably have to coach more than 5 years to become the 3rd most beloved, but there are only 2 guys clearly ahead of him, so maybe he is.
Can he become the most successful? Sure, but he's gotta win a natty to do it...

Coach Howard was a legend and the sign on his door said so.

He had an office at Clemson until he died--his title actually was "legend." He will always be #1.
Danny will probably always be my personal favorite as he was coach during a time when I able to attend every game.
Actually, I like all three.

1) To lots of Clemson fans, yes.
2) Yes.
My personal opinion:
Dabo is my favorite Clemson coach and is the best Clemson head coach of all time.
