Very excited for Admission to Clemson Class of 2024

Dec 19, 2019, 11:03 PM

My daughter was accepted to Clemson University Class of 2024 today. We received her Tiget Town Bound Package in the mail which makes it official. We were confident she would be accepted to Clemson but the letter was a pleasant early surprise.

The information in the package stated she had also been awarded a merit scholarship which we would receive in February 2020. We have been led to believe it will be a 100% full academic scholarship.

Clemson is a fantastic school and a great achievement and I am very proud of her. She worked incredibly hard to meet the rigorous admission requirements at Clemson. To be accepted early with a scholarship offer is amazing.

It will be interesting to see if she chooses Clemson or decides to attend elsewhere. I would be very happy is she chooses to call Clemson l home and I am glad she has many options from which to choose. We want her where she feels at home and wants to spend the next 4 years learning and growing.

Congrats

Clemson is a bit tight on merit scholarships since so much demand and competition to attend the school. Hope the $$$ lines up with your expectations.

We are encouraging her to revisit the places she has been accepted and decide where she feels most at home and wants to spend the next 4 years.

She has numerous opportunities (accepted at 7 schools thus far) and we are still waiting for word from a number of schools. Duke has not responded yet nor Chapel Hill. Wofford waits until February to send out acceptances as does the Ivies.

I have degrees from Wofford and Duke but we have encouraged her to go where she feels at home

SC Schools definitely have a strong program to offer with the Palmetto Fellows Program which makes the full scholarship opportunities possible. Wofford, Clemson, and USC Honors are all excellent schools that could prepare her for the next stage beyond undergraduate school.

Congrats - hope she becomes a Tiger***

Our Daughter was admitted to the Calhoun Honor's College at Clemson University this week and of course, we are proud of her amazing achievements. She has been admitted to every school she applied to. We are still waiting on Duke and the Ivies which are a crapshoot at best regardless of grades and test scores.

I do have to give a Shout Out to TigerDave in a post above who cautioned about tight Clemson Merit Scholarships. He was correct and we were somewhat surprised by Clemson's lackluster Academic Financial Offer.

From what we can gather Clemson has drastically cut scholarships to In State Students instead offering out of state students, a huge discount, including offering scholarships to equal in-state tuition rates for OOS students to attend Clemson at in-state rates.

We did receive right at $18K from Clemson but that is less than half of what she has received from great schools equal to or maybe higher regarded than Clemson. Very disappointed to hear financial aid is going to out of state students offering in-state tuition rates at the expense of extremely highly qualified in-state students. When things like this happen then you have to wonder. I guess going to Clemson for $8 to $9K is pretty good but I am still left questioning why students would pay almost 10 to go to Clemson when other outstanding schools are offering much stronger and better financial terms.

Not sure where Clemson ranks now on her list. She had larger scholarship rewards (2X in some cases) from other great schools. William and Mary, Wofford, Mercer, Chapel Hill, Alabama Capstone (Honors) and South Carolina Honors College among a few other great schools that have all offered substantially more)

Still, we are proud she was admitted to Clemson and Calhoun Honors and realize there are many other students around the state who would be honored to receive these opportunities. I hope every South Carolina High School reaches their dream school and enjoys their college experience.

Congratulation to your daughter !
My own daughter graduates this August from Clemson and even with her instate tuition and various scholarships received it was an expensive 4 years for me :)
Financially speaking colleges ( especially popular and/or well respected institutions ) have gotten out of hand with the costs .
Anyway , I say congrats again and enjoy the journey .

To be honest, Clemson charges out of state kids double (or did when my two went), despite receiving less than 10% of operating cost from the state. They really gouged us.

Sorry the money isn’t lining up

My niece went thru similar exercise last year after honors college acceptance. Clemson financial offer was disappointing with only smaller scholarships offered.

She decided to attend NCState out of state with better scholarship money and guaranteed summer job at SAS throughout college. She’s loving it up there.

Re: Sorry the money isn’t lining up

Feb 19, 2020, 1:20 AM

Someone asked me for what she had been offered for various colleges.
Without being overly specific......

Alabama ~ $40K
Mercer - 35K
Wofford almost $50K
Florida State over $35K
Chapel Hill Almost $30
Clemson $17,700
Baylor tentatively $40K (Waiting for details)
Still waiting for USC financial aid package

You get the idea.....

As far as Grades

SAT 1490, ACT 33, 36 on Math and Science
GPA 5.17

Colleges definitely desire the highest caliber students, but unfortunately in the case of Clemson they have a fairly large student enrollment (and growing) yet relatively small endowments from which to offer academic scholarships.

As an alumn and out of stater, I sure wish the scholarship funds were available for our daughter who is currently attending Clemson. Very proud Dad, but the cost is crazy.

Did you look at the net cost or just the offers? Based on the numbers we were given, $50K in scholarship money at Wofford and $17K in scholarship money at Clemson would make the net cost very similar.

Wofford also did not actually offer her major so would have been a serious waste of her time and our money.

That’s my question - KAT ... To me net cost is all that matters - financially speaking .....

Agree KAT. I hear this stuff all the time and it's amazing

Feb 19, 2020, 10:30 PM [ in reply to Re: Sorry the money isn’t lining up ]

how people seem to get caught up on the gross scholarship offers versus the net cost. Seems to me the $18K offered by Clemson and the state Palmetto scholly of $10K does, in fact, equal a substantially 100% academic scholarship to CU.

Sure out-of-state schools will offer more gross $$, but most of those, like William & Mary, have high out-of-state tuition. All schools need to offer more to OOS students to be competitive.

Seems to me people LOVE saying I got $30,000 (x4 = $120K) from so and so school, yet they still owe $10K a year to cover tuition. Whereas, CU is basically free tuition. Seems silly.

Re: Agree KAT. I hear this stuff all the time and it's amazing

You make a good point but there is a little of your information that is incorrect.

The Palmetto Scholarship is not $10K
There are 3 levels:
$2500
$5000
$6700 for the Palmetto Fellows is the top level requires Top 6% of your HS class / 1200 SAT and a 3.5 GPA.

After your Freshman Year, you can be awarded another $2500 in you are in a STEM program for $9200

Clemson and every other SC college include the SC State Scholarships as part of their offered packages.

Of course, we look at the so-called bottom line and the actual cost to attend. Most every school includes this information on their website and on their Financial Aid.

Clemson
Tuition and fees — $15,558
Room and board — $11,414
$26,972
-$17,700
$9,272

Wofford
$61,380
-48,250
$13,130

I have spreadsheet after spreadsheet looking at the financial aspect.

Your point is valid, however. You could be awarded $50K from Duke and still owe $31,250 a year or $$125,000 over 4 years.....incredible. The Ivy League schools are all the same and neither Duke or the Ivy Schools give scholarships. All based on financial needs.

Even though my niece was a National Merit Finalist and scored over 1500 on the SAT, Clemson offered her hardly any scholarships. She ended accepting a full scholarship to attend Alabama with a monthly stipend this past fall. I really wanted her to go to Clemson, but the full scholarship was hard to pass up.

Alabama offered to waive out of state tuition and offered merit money in addition.

At the moment Bama would be about $3200 a year to attend out of state.

Congratulations to your daughters offer. My daughter was offered a full ride as an out of state (NC) resident and disappointing to me she chose Chapel Hill. I went to Clemson at 30 after military service so I took her as a child to most of the home games while attending Clemson. She loved the games and loved Clemson so I thought. She has done very well and proud of her accomplishments. As a parent we just want the best for our children.

Thank you for your service to our country.

She has been accepted to UNC-CH as an out of state student, but we do not have the Financial Aid Package yet.

We are not really holding out much hope for a great deal of money.

We are assuming UNC-CH at $34,000 out of state so we would need substantial money to offset the OOS tuition and the $6,700 from Palmetto Fellows.

Just FYI Chapel Hill Instate Tuition is $4,400.

First off, congrats!!

Second, I would like to hear how the scholarship money turns out. One of my daughters had a similar experience, but the money was not a full ride. It was around 80%, but not 100%. Maybe there would have been more money if we pushed the issue. Can you tell me what major she applied in?

BTW, my first daughter ended up not going (money wasn't the reason) and she is at an Ivy this year. She also got into Duke, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UVA, UNC, etc....

My curiosity is because I have another who WILL be attending CU this year (just accepted too). I really like those scholarships :) .

Go Tigers!!
