College Football north of I-40 has been in a death spiral

Aug 13, 2020, 10:04 AM

toward irrelevance for years anyways, with Ohio State being the final outlier. And this may well be their death blow. All the other traditional Northern "powers" are basically DOA - Michigan, ND, Nebraska, Penn State.....

Name a team north of I-40 (interstate that runs E-W Raleigh-Memphis-California) that has won a recent national football championship other than Ohio State. You will have to go back to decades that begin with a "19", Nebraska in the mid 1990's. Almost 25 years.

This is not some strange coincidence. Their era has passed.

You could say the same thing for west of the Mississippi. Texas in 2005, (haha USC), Oklahoma in 2000? It is a really focused quadrant.

College football fans in the south just care more about the sport. Period.

The answer to this conundrum is demographics via history

So you want to eliminate the team that disproves your point?

I understand you are trying to push an agenda here. However, I disagree. What I know is that there is no drop off from athletics north of this “line”. If you paid any attention over the past ten years. North of that line has faired well in recruiting. We have lost quiet a few to north of that “line” Sam Brown was right in our back yard this past year over with many offers. However he( from GA) picked WV. I could name a lot that has went north. The SEC and ACC have been recruiting negatively when Urban was at OSU and against Jim. The climate is a huge topic of discussions to recruiting. It’s not just that but recent success from SEC schools and Clemson also plays into recruiting. Also leadership is a huge factor and relationships. OSU, ORE, WSH, PSU, WIS, are building programs. I don’t really see your point how they are “finished?”

WSH facilities are amazing and Northwestern is coming alone as well. I just don’t see the evidence that these areas are “finished”

Well Kenan stadium is just south of 40. Wallace Wade and Carter Finley are just north of 40. So, I officially support the original poster.
