In this case DW won't lose his starting spot, because of the difference in talent. I think the world of Cole, but he's not even a consistent QB, even against lesser competition.

there will be that awkward moment when both stoudt and watson put their helmets on at the same time. Do not put it past this staff to give Cole the first crack at Ted Roof's defense.

personally, I would rather settle this against Wake if he is ready to go.

This. If DW isn't 100% he shouldn't play a snap unless disaster is on the horizon (like Dabo eluded to). If he is 100% there is no reason he shouldn't start.
