Clemsoning

Good Post from 6317forever® about USCjr being a better example but I am confused about what Clemsoning is...
I thought it was losing to a team you a favored over...not losing to the a top ten team close. Every time Clemson losses now it is"Clemson pulling a Clemson." I'm confused.

losing against all odds as a result. This covers inexplicable blowouts to teams like nc state and georgia tech, but it also covers inexplicable performances to teams like FSU last year and WVU in the O bowl. We just added a new wrinkle by thoroughly outplaying the #1 team in the country but somehow managed to repeatedly screw ourselves over in rare and monumental fashion.
We have a reputation for being headcases.

Every team in the country manages to lose games in ridiculous ways. It's 18-21 year old kids. Every team is a headcase.
To specifically point at one team and say "Yep, they're the only team to ever blow a game" is stupid.

I can go find a ton of examples of every team in the country blowing a lot of games on a lot of big stages.
The idea that somehow Clemson loses way more games than anyone else is not accurate.

How do you explain the nationwide perception then?

Is it just a conspiracy? It's not coming from just coots. It's coming from a broad spectrum of sources.
I love Clemson, but I'm aware of the reputation we earned.
Name a school over the last 5 years that has as many examples of inexplicable catastrophe that has embarrassed them on the big stage as much as we have suffered. Factor in talent as well. Maybe you are right, but I strongly doubt it.

Since 2009 there is nothing on that list that compares to...
Sep 29, 2014, 12:00 PM
|
|
1. The Orange Bowl. Giving up 70 points and breaking an all-time bowl record.
2. Setting another record in getting blown out at home by FSU last year.
3. Getting blown out by NC State a few years back.
4. Getting blown out by Georgia Tech a few years back.
Losing close to a good team that outplayed you is one thing. It's the way we lose on the big stage that haunts us. 5 turnovers to the Coots, 5 or 6 inexplicable screwups against FSU. We are a good team that shoots itself in the foot. Nobody else who screws up as bad as we do is as talented as we are. Either way, How many tough wins did the Coots pull out of nowhere after being outplayed over the last 5 years? A ton. They get lucky and find a way to win. We get unlucky and find a way to lose. That is the difference.

In the 2011 NC State game, Clemson played flat. After beating Wake Forest the week before, Clemson had a lock in for the ACC Championship game, so this game didn't matter as much for them. On the other hand, NC State had a lot to play for as they were playing for their first bowl game in a long time. Sammy Watkins was also out that day due to injury, and Tajh Boyd had gained weight as the year progressed, so he wasn't able to do as much.
In the case of the 2012 Orange Bowl, Clemson had a poor defense that year. After that game, Kevin Steele resigned. Their defense gradually started improving after that. Clemson got back into the Orange Bowl in 2014 and beat Ohio State 40 to 35.
In the 2013 FSU game, FSU had the advantage of a bye week. Clemson had gotten through a tough Boston College game the week before. Clemson was more tired whereas FSU was fresh and more rested. FSU was also the better team that night, so even if Clemson was fresh, they would have probably still lost, but it would have likely not been a blow out.
South Carolina last week blew a lead in the 4th Quarter and got upset by Missouri 21-20.
Clemson has also had games where they have come from behind and found a way to win. An example is the LSU game in the Peach Bowl of 2012. They finished in the top 10 that year with an 11-2 record.

What would be an example of a loss that couldn't be lumped in? We lose the whole time against someone we should?

What about when your coach promises to wins titles and championships ...and then does neither ? Is that pulling a Coot ? What about losing to an unranked team at home when you are a 2 td favorite ? Is that Dirtpeckering ?
