Clemson should start an online Auto Repair Tech Program.

Jul 18, 2020, 11:14 AM

Clemson's issue seems to be the declining number of graduates that can change their own oil or replace a fuel pump.

Part of me would love for Clemson to just become a full on auto repair tech school, but this is basically impossible.

So my idea is this: Clemson should start professional schools such as auto repair, book keeping, dental hygienist, etc. These could be purely private, meaning that they are not affiliated with the state in any way. They could be located on land adjacent to Clemson-owned land in Clemson, or be located in Greenville.

Clemson could charge private tuition accordingly. This would not only significantly increase Clemson's revenue, but also attract more notoriety as a university. Finally, it would also increase the number of low-earning Clemson graduates, and thus the amount of alumni giving.

I'm sure there would be a lot of legal stuff required to get this done, but I bet it's possible. And it would be a huge win for Clemson University.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.

You have to come up with a different name such as Doctor of Mobile Technology or Engineering Technology Mobility.

You know have it your way as CEO of Second Shifting Deepfrys Master Degree ?? at Decoots University.

Why not? Auto mechanics in many, many cases make a lot more than a lot of those degree holders. Plus they are not in debt up to their eyeballs. My little 21 month tech cert allowed me to earn a VERY good living. All for $250 per semester too, laughing all da way to da bank Balm.

Snap, i was wrong upon pondering it on cost. That was per 3 semesters. $75 per semester and with the fees it came to $250 per year.

Jul 18, 2020, 6:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Clemson should start an online Auto Repair Tech Program. ]

Turning wrenches for a dealership when I was a auto tech, a really good year was around $60K, a slow year, $45-50 K a year. When I was doing it up until 1990, that was a decent paycheck, plus I had a little shop at my house where I did side jobs for people that couldn't afford Dealership labor rates, but at home I made the same amount an hour as I did in the Dealership, but I couldn't do the jobs that you had to have a lift to do, not laying on your back to do them. At home I just did brake jobs, tune ups, transmission services, and oil changes, but I had more work doing that than I had time to do them, plus I made a few bucks from the parts it took to do the jobs that I done. Working at the Dealership, and the side jobs at home, I could make $70K a year with $20-25K of that was tax free....

We must be very careful who we name the College of Auto Mechanical Engineering program and building after. We certainly don't need to select names that we will be forced, sorry, persuaded to cave in to change some years down the road.
