I know it would be hard to find another like Pinion. He was a real weapon on kickoffs and punts.

I'm not at all concerned about him kicking FG's and PAT's but he definitely needs to work on his leg strength so he can put every KO through the end zone.

this year can kick it out the back of the EZ. And if they dont on rare occasions, we can't get the ball back to the 20 yard line. However, if we kick the ball off, well you know

FGs and extra points are fine ... we need a KO specialist

... and you don't use a scholarship on one of those, you just identify the guy with an atomic bomb for a leg who will walk on and earn his scholarship by preventing critical special teams coverage lapses that have happened to us several times this year, but only came back to bite us on the butt in the National Championship game.
Guys who can kick it a long way are all over the place. They just aren't heavily recruited because they can't kick the ball straight through the goal posts from 40+ yards out.
As has been pointed out numerous times before ... they are the equivalent of the guy who dominates the long drive contest in golf, but cannot break 100 on the course to save his life.

I play golf with a guy like that....

He easily drives the ball between 330 and 350 yards on a bad day but he can't always control it so he often finds himself scrambling to get out of bad spots. He can't chip or putt to save his life so even when he's playing well, he still struggles to break 90.
He gets invited to play in a lot of scrambles, captains choice, and best ball type tournaments because he hits the ball so darn far but that's pretty much all he brings to the table

P Will Spiers was on campus for the FSU game and is interested in looking at a preferred walk-on spot but could also lace em' up for the Tiger baseball team as well. The 6-5, 210-pound senior has since been offered as a preferred walk-on punter. Spiers, whose father played both football and baseball at Clemson, will take an official visit sometime this month.
Another I'd keep an eye on is Austin Kent from Charlotte. While he is still being evaluated, Kent averaged 47 yards per punt and 34 of his 38 kickoffs went for a touch back. Kent has made three field goals of more than 50 yards including a 55 yarder. One opposing coach stated, “That’s the best daggone kicker I’ve ever seen in high school in person, hands down.”
Additionally, deep snapper Patrick Phibbs (6-3 220) of Pittsburgh plans to join the Clemson program in 2016 as an invited walk-on.

Can't find any connection between the two

I'm left to assume that if there was a connection it would be mentioned. From the articles I've read not one has said anything other than his Will's father played at Clemson. Appears to be coincidental. His personal bio from this read makes no mention of it either.

Did you know?: Spiers was two-sport standout at Cemson, earning All-American honors in baseball and earning a spot on the football team as a walk-on punter ... was a first round draft pick in the 1987 MLB Draft and made his Major League Debut in 1989 ... was a career .271 hitter in 12 MLB seasons ... has spent 13 years as an assistant baseball and football coach under Adam Jarecki.

I have been following the Kent kid

For much of the season and he appears to be a solid kicker. I have no idea what kind of student he is. He is just waiting for an offer and no one seems willing to take the chance
The kickoff in the last game that was returned was not covered very well. How many times have we said that? The kick went to the corner of the field at the end zone and should have never been returned for major yards. Poor coverage and tackling. Same for the tight end catch that sealed the win for Bama. Plays such as that should be stopped quickly by an average defense. Bet the a tigers work on these things in the next few months!

Seems like they could find a flunky off the soccer team that could drive one through the end zone.
