compared to this. (politics-wise)

All those things are a joke compared to the threat of our deficit. It is absolutely an existential threat.

Either America has to come together and shift it's stupid ### priorities or we are going down hard. If you are capable, start rejecting tribalism now and become a one-issue voter. Or argue yourself into ruin.

specifics about what the actual apocalyptic consequences would be, but didn't really find anything.

Can you explain, in practical terms, what would happen to me if this "breaking point" is reached?

In my own words, the financial crisis that could result from the combined factors of...

1. Debt so much it becomes mathematically impossible to pay if off
2. Collapse of US credit rating
3. Countries finally find alternative to petrodollar (aggressive foreign policy makes this more attractive)
4. Value of dollar collapses leading to hyperinflation which makes economic growth impossible
5. Mass unemployment results
6. Due do extreme difficulty to find revenue (smaller tax base and massively smaller source of borrowed capital) then basic government programs are gone and our ability to defend ourselves drops.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Still a little light on the practical application...

Feb 18, 2019, 10:50 AM

But I did get a couple of them from your links: not getting Social Security/Medicare benefits when it comes time; military being depleted; hyperinflation

Mass unemployment could obviously affect me, but you didn't really provide a connection that says why my company (or other companies) would have to lay off a lot of people.

Cap on defense, Medicare/Medicaid for sure. Raise SS age to 70.

What else?

Who was the last politician to rail about this? Paul Ryan?

Joe Scarborough used to every day until the 2016 eclection. That’s the last I heard about it.

Reduce spending on everything.

Feb 18, 2019, 10:53 AM [ in reply to What should we do? ]

Shrink the FBI, Shrink the CIA, Shrink the DOD (bring troops home, close most bases, focus on actual DEFENSE) , Shrink medicare, shrink medicaid, shrink social security. Shrink the federal government. Shrink the welfare state.

Then start walking back taxes as the debt/GDP ratio drops. Keep that power OUT of the Fed's hands. Slowly remove the power/size/scope of federal government and distribute it back to states and local governments who are far more likely to balance their budget.

Either make hard choices now, or much harder choices later. It's already not fair, but we have to get over that.

Feb 18, 2019, 9:22 PM

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." Thomas Jefferson

“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions.” — James Madison, January 21, 1792,

“I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it.” — Benjamin Franklin

“Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide.” — John Adams

in the US (Shays Rebellion, Whiskey Rebellion etc which lead to Constitution instead of articles of confederation).

The quote was from 1814. Remember that Democracy is usually used as a reference to an attribute of governments most of the time, not the form of govt itself. The Founding fathers believed democracy to be bad for the republic.

Cut defense by 25%. Cut a bunch of other crap. Increase capital gains taxes. End corporate loopholes. Be as diligent keeping money in as foreign labor out.

Most importantly, make people understand they are responsible for their own prosperity and nothing is free.

Teach finances in high school. Most Americans don't know enough to be scared shitless.

Feb 18, 2019, 10:54 AM

Austerity measures with regards to spending. That will buy us some time with world wide creditors and a chance to actually dig us out of the some of the hole we are in. If they actually worked, or at least stemmed the tide a bit, I think we would be OK as long as they were continued.

The problem is what spending austerity would include--cutting off all unnecessary programs, funding and assistance for other countries, and massive military spending cuts. That would necessarily cause a lot of unemployment and our economy would take a dump--which in the short term at least, make the spending cuts seem worse and that they aren't working.

Trump. It's economic. He may initiate (and is to an extent) the spiral. And rest assured, Congress will be QUICK to blame the President, WHOEVER it is. We simply can not afford an economic boom. 5% growth? BAD NEWS. Money in pockets is dangerous. Wages MUST remain flat. The alternative to rising wages is default.

No matter the tax rate, for 80+ years federal revenue has ALWAYS been between 15-20% of GDP. This crap about taxing the top 1% of incomes at 70%, 90%, whatever...will bring in almost zero new revenue.

Only solution is term limits and a balanced budget amendment. And the only way there is Article V. Aside from that, we will fail.
