Didn't David Beckham tear an Achilles walking backwards? Sometimes it just does.

have some powerful legs to whip the other foot and crack the two lower bones. He did hit it at their weakest point though...right in the middle.

The anterior cruciate ligament extends anteriorly (front)

on the knee. When his toe caught his heel, his ligament was taut and his muscles were dorsiflexing (pulling up foot towards knee). When you pull the muscle that hard with the thigh portion moving forward with momentum, there is the potential for tendon and ligament damage due to the separation going on in the knee area.
Not sure if it is the case, but can certainly see it happening....just physics. His leg was going forward, his heel was an immovable object...somethings gotta give in that joint.

Yep, it's a plant and cut injury. Although usually if it is that severe you wouldn't necessarily be able or advised to walk off the field. That's why I think it is more likely his PCL. With his knee bent, it looked like his femur continued traveling forward over his tibia during the cut which would damage the PCL not the ACL. But they were doing a Lachmans on him on the side line which looked positive for an ACL too so just have to wait for the MRI. Next to the surgeons eyes, it's the gold standard.

His left shoe top caught on the cleat on his right heel... Top part of his leg continued upward in the running motion, lower leg was caught... Pop

Physically from what I saw, the announcer completely screwed

up his description....It happened on the plant and cut prior to him going down. It's why he held it in the air on that final hop. looked to me like with all of his momentum going to his left when he planted on that left leg and cut hard back to the right the knee "caved and buckled" a bit which means the joint shifted. Same thing happened to mine in high school, no contact just too much twist and inertia on the joint at one time.
Freak accident!

His right knee looked like it buckled on replay, but the injury was to his left knee

Blew my patella tendon just by jumping for a ball. Orthopedic surgeon said planting while it twists is how knees blow out.

ACL can be torn making a cutting move where the tibia slides forward on the femur causing tension on the acl. It causes laxity in the knee.
Meniscus injuries are usually twisting injuries like earlier in the year when leggett was injured he twisted his knee.
