"I think the bottom line is that you show respect with your demeanor," she said. "Whether you put your hand over your heart, hold your hat at shoulder level or waist level, is really in this day and age irrelevant."

Podium presentation of THREE Americans receiving medals, with the gold going to a Clemson girl, and your reaction is outrage because of an etiquette breach, that is sad. I'm a man in my 40s and I didn't know you were supposed to put your hand over your heart.
Perhaps, NYB, you should just enjoy a great event, then maybe write a letter to the US Olympic committee and ask them to advise all athletes on the proper etiquette during the anthem.

I'm not saying your a negative bonehead, but I would draw your attention to the fact that she's worked tirelessly for years in order to represent Clemson and the US in the Olympics.
She brings us home a Gold Medal. Great for her, great for Clemson and great for us. But you detract from all of that over mindless symbolism.
Well, you can take that self-righteous, negative, couch potato faux patriotism and stick it right up your olympic sized asspodium!

I am proud of the ladies because they did so well.
But this debate was interesting to me. I lived on military bases while my Dad was stationed in Germany. At 4:30 every night the national anthem was played while they lowered the flag. My Dad always expected me to stand there with my hands at my sides, no slouching, swaying, talking, or fidgeting. He never told me to put my hand over my heart.
When I got older and noticed folks doing it, I figured it was just a preference and not necessarily something that was required. To this day, I continue ue to do what my Dad taught me.....except now I like to sing the anthem too.
I will have to consider changing my ways if people consider it disrespectful.

During rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed, all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should render the military salute at the first note of the anthem and retain this position until the last note. When the flag is not displayed, those present should face toward the music and act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed there.

heart while singing the national anthem. I've also never been at a sporting event where people did not routinely cheer after the anthem, which is an absolute breach of protocol, and yet nobody stands around griping about it.
