Bobby Dodd Vs. Bear Bryant

Anybody remember how the press used to compare the Dodd coached Georgia Tech program with the Bryant coached Alabama program. Both were very successful, but their approaches were quite different ..... much like Saban and Dabo now. Dodd believed in a much more "gentle" approach while Bryant's approach was much more of a task master. Two ways to skin a cat I guess you could say!

PS: "Gentle" doesn't mean babying and a team not being tough.

I just reread Bear's 1975 book, and he revealed a lot about his feelings for Bobby Dodd. He said that Dodd was much softer in his approach and didn't work his team as hard. But, he also said that Dodd was the smartest and the best game day coach in college football.

The two of them had some great games against each other while Tech was still in the SEC.

That's exactly what I remember. I know we got waxed many a time by Bobby Dodd teams. I don't think anyone thinks that we are soft by any imagination now, but there is certainly a contrast in coaching styles and the way the programs are run.

My father played at GT under Dood. Around 1965 coach Dood gave me a football for Christmas. I still have it.

Your dad must have been a good player ...... GT was still strong in the middle to late 60's. I still have nightmares of Billy Lotheridge and RB's like Lennie Snow ......

May father played in the early 50’s.
I was born in 1958. Dodd gave me the present when I was about 8 years old.
My father was a great athlete.
He was drafted by the Phillies in baseball and the 49ers in football.
Pro sport did not pay good money back then do he joined the Air Force. Lol

My father died from cancer at 66 years old in 1996. I miss him. His name was #### Harvin from Manning, SC. My old man was cool.
