Anyone remember the CJ Barber/Michael Hamlin recruiting

Jan 14, 2008, 11:07 AM

battle?

CJ Barber was the higher rated safety recruit (also from SC, I believe), but couldn't get the academics in order. Either way, we went head to head with SCar for him, and somehow they won out. We "settled" for Hamlin, though a lot of us had a feeling that he was going to be a standout player.

4 years after the fact, it seems like we got the better end of the deal.

Billie & Watkins

Jan 14, 2008, 1:39 PM

The rock solid awards say "for the most consistent and dependable player". So, explain to me how Billie and Watkins can win these awards when they are ineligible for the teams' final game. If not meeting academic requirements and missing a game because of it doesn't show how little your teammates can depend on you, then I don't know what does? I guess the criteria for being dependable is playing in 12 of 13 games. I guess by not doing what's necessary in the classroom as a 5th year senior and sesequently becoming ineligible, doesn't make one less dependable.

Although I agree in a way to what you're saying, those awards had nothing to do with academic issues or academic awards. They were dedicated to football (maybe too much)...and that's why they received the awards they did. You could always tell they worked hard, etc. Maybe Bowden could start making players that are suspended at least one game due to academics are ineligible for any season award....
