Because it's very difficult to do both well...

we saw that in 2010 when he tried to play first base as well as be a weekend starter. The time he spent practicing first base took away from the time he had to work with coach Pep and his pitching suffered. This season the coaches decided to concentrate on one facet of his game and it worked out well.

Will never really wanted to pitch. He even told the scouts that he would rather be a position player. But he was drafted as a pitcher because that's where he has the most LONG TERM potential.

He was very erratic on the mound this year. Most of the time he was mid to upper 80's, only rarely getting the ball into the 90's. Even when he got his velocity up he still got hit pretty hard because his fastball was pretty flat and his curve ball was not very good.

Had he concentrated exclusively on pitching he would undoubtedly have done a lot better. But Leggett made the correct decision, Will helped us more in the field than he would have on the mound. I'm sure you will see a lot of improvement now that he is concentrating on pitching exclusively.
