Dec 28, 2013, 12:54 PM

disappointing as I think he can really help us but you could sort of see this one coming with the lack of pt. Hope he does well at his next stop

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-74tiger.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Personally...

Dec 28, 2013, 2:36 PM

from what I saw from him the last few games, he deserved a lot more PT. And as bad as we need shooters, Brownell didn't help himself here.
Another questionable move by Brad? Who knows.

really sucks.

Umm, WHAT??! A psuedo-starter?? This is not good

Dec 28, 2013, 12:54 PM

He's one of the better players on this team! I'm not happy about this, but I wish him the best.

(Sigh)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

totally agree, can't be good for a team desparately seeking.

Not cool

one of our best scorers just bailed on the program.

Hopefully, we can get a raw, athletic, defensive specialist

Dec 28, 2013, 1:24 PM

Devoe does not play against the type of competition that Coleman and Filer saw in high school.

Not exactly great stats.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Only started one game?!?!? Avg 5.4 points!?!?!

Dec 28, 2013, 5:00 PM

Hard to get great stats when you avg. 11 minutes/gm. I'm going to assume he is the defensive liability Brownell hinted that he was. I can't say I've noticed it but then I only had 11 min./gm.to watch him. If he is such a liability I don't understand why Brownell said a couple of weeks ago that he wished he had had Coleman last year because he believed he could have helped with their offensive problems. Apparently he is only a liability when you have an oversupply of guards. He was second in shooting percentage both from the floor and at the line. IMO this is an example of poor roster management that a kid is having to pay for a coach's decision and another kid is going to have to pay for it also before next season. I expect this out of the likes of Spurrier and Martin but I'm surprised its happpening at Clemson. Brownell obviously feels he's not yet adequately equipped to deal with the new ACC, although so far that's turning out to be a joke since only three of them are in the Top 25

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Not cool

Dec 28, 2013, 6:56 PM [ in reply to Not cool ]

But I've heard he couldn't pull his weight on defense, and we are a defensively run team. So I guess Brownell figured he couldn't pull his weight on our D, and don't need him!!!

So we lose to Auburn and BB still can't keep anyone from transferring. How are the sunshine pumpers gonna spin this one?

We don't, we leave to the one we pay big bucks to iron out the wrinkles. After all, he is the coach... We will see the big picture of his plans before it's over... zi do know you will play defense first in his plan.

with family and friends so I hope this is a win-win for both parties. My problem is that I have already watched this movie a couple of times since Brownell arrived in town. It never seems to lead to improvement on our end. To the contrary: 22 wins becomes 16; 16 wins becomes 13.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brownell has had 3 prior transfers

Dec 28, 2013, 9:48 PM

Noel Johnson and Donte Hill did nothing at the schools they transferred too, they were recruiting misses by Purnell. Sullivan, we'll see. He was signed by Brownell but was a Purnell recruit we kept committed. Sullivan was a tweener at the ACC level, to small as a PF and to slow as a SF. Maybe he'll fare better against the lesser competition in CUSA. His asthma issues did not help. It's these type reasons I think Brownell needs some time. Yes, he inherited a tourny team. But he lost 2 scholarship guys off that team prior to the conference season(Hill and Johnson), basically had no recruiting class that year(Stanton) because of his late arrival that spring, and of the 4 recruits he signed prior to 2012-13(Hall, McDaniels, Coleman and Sullivan) the 2 best(McDaniels and Hall) were guys Brownell recruited, Sullivan, the highest rated, was a Purnell recruit who did not work out. I do really wish we'd been able to see what Coleman would have done last year, but the serious injury derailed that. And it's cost him what he lacked most, the athleticism to compete at an ACC level.

Wonderful...where did this come from, I thought he was getting plenty of playing time?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nope. He has a really good +/- in most games, but didn't

Dec 28, 2013, 1:37 PM

get many minutes at all. The writing was on the wall. I'm frustrated about this because he is the third best scorer on the team in my opinion and is still a young player.

Dec 28, 2013, 1:53 PM

He may have been the 3rd best scorer on the team, but there were reasons he didn't get a lot of playing time. Since we aren't at practice, no one on here knows why. No matter what a lot of you on here think, our coaches aren't stupid.

Agree..... no clue why he played so little. I don't see practice, but this seems like a big loss. 15-15 looks probable. If we don't make the NIT this year or next it's time to begin hot seat discussion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I seem to recall saying that exact thing last week.

Let's guard expectations that begin with "If"! We don't have all the answers. IMO, trust the process in place that allows ALL Tiger Coaches to do their job under review by the one in the appropriate pay grade, so ALL Tiger Fans can support the program as a fan.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, our coaches aren't stupid. That said,

Dec 28, 2013, 2:28 PM [ in reply to Re: Nope. He has a really good +/- in most games, but didn't ]

Brownell is a bit out of his element in the ACC. He never played basketball at a high level either in high school or in college. When he coached at UNC-W and Wright State, he may have coached against high-level talent 5 or 6 times a year. If his teams played solid defense and disciplined on offense, he had a shot in those handful of games that mattered. He doesn't seem to appreciate how much that had changed when he landed at Clemson (and how much more it is about to change with Syracuse, Pitt, Notre Dame, and Louisville arriving on the scene).

Brownell's fixation with a slow-it-down, make-each-shot-count approach to offense was borne out of necessity. Most of the players he coached at his previous schools simply weren't very good. Not one of them was good enough to play in the ACC. That may seem obvious, but Brownell does not see this. The kid from TN who had been a Wright State commit is the perfect example of Brownell's naïveté. It never should have crossed his mind to bring him to Clemson. Coleman and Filer were two of Brownell's recruits who were ACC caliber players. One is gone, the other likely.

What does playing at a high level have to do with coaching???????

What is a high level of high school LOL IT'S HIGH SCHOOL

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Most of his minutes were against low-mid majors

Dec 28, 2013, 2:55 PM [ in reply to Nope. He has a really good +/- in most games, but didn't ]

he simply did not have the quickness to guard better athletes. Whether the injury affected this or not is a question, but their was little doubt when he was on the court against a guy with quickness he got beat regularly, and the coaches saw this in practice daily

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Playing time

He basically didnt play in Auburn game. I thought he'd be a major player for us! I'm very dissapointed. Has to be some bad blood between him and Coach B.

Backcourt has been crowded...

Dec 28, 2013, 2:39 PM

It was pretty obvious that Hall/Roper were the starting guards with Filer/Harrison as the backups. Not many minutes left for Coleman. Hopefully Coleman lands on his feet.
Maybe this will help the team in some way and work out better for all involved.
With Rooks in the rotation next year, it was going to be even more crowded

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why leave now? He will sit next year and only play 1

Dec 28, 2013, 3:25 PM

Re: Basketball Player Update: Devin Coleman to transfer

Dec 28, 2013, 2:45 PM

Not sure but I think his problem is Defense. He is a good shooter but struggles on defense. I believe I read CB saying the like several weeks ago.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Have you ever watched him play defense??...

Dec 28, 2013, 4:20 PM

You can't just have a guy on the floor because he is a pretty good shooter and on defense he limits his team to 4 on 5.

I wish him well, but wherever he goes he will have to play D or he will find himself riding the pine again.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Simple really

Dec 28, 2013, 9:39 PM

he struggled to guard as a freshman and this was the reason he didn't really play a lot until the final month of that year. After the injury, his quickness was diminished and he struggled to guard even more. Not his fault the injury occurred. He has skill offensively. Probably unrealistic expectations, including by me some, on how he'd come back. He improved his skill in the down time, but the loss of quickness pretty much wrote his ticket. Good kid, he'll help a mid-major somewhere

Devin was just beginning to jell--and then this fallout-one more will have to go to make room for the two coming in--who's next? The two coming in will make a huge beginning finally. Time is running out.

Devin is a really good ballplayer who can put the ball in the basket ... the whole fetish of defense first is really bizarre ... you can have the greatest D players in the world but if on the other hand, they can't make a simple jump shot ...............

Everyone do the math....

Dec 30, 2013, 12:11 PM

scholarship limit is 13, we currently have 13 guys on scholarship with no seniors and 2 guys signed for next year both of whom will be better than coleman. Two guys have to go to make room for these 2....BB knows what he was doing. That original 5 man class he signed BB needed bodies, he didn't have any depth now he is recruiting talent and getting rid of some of those "bodies"
