Odds do not favor him

He would have had a much better chance had he come here. With that said, I wish him the best of luck.

Most teams will include a deferred payment for tuition at a 4 year institution when you are finished playing or if you do not garner another contract. So, if that's the case he has nothing to lose at this point. But, that really sucks for the tigers.

The odds would not favor him after 3 or 4 years at Clemson either.
If the contract is for $497,000 a year, I think he is making a wise move if he is wanting to focus on baseball. I wish him well. Sucks for us, he might have been just what we needed.

It's not $497K a year. That is just the signing bonus. That is not life changing money. After tax, the kid is gonna get about $300K and then be living in the minor leagues for a while. Not worth giving up a chance at a college education and possibly improving your game and stock at Clemson. That being said, I wish him well and hope his dreams come to fruition.

Was thinking the same thing. After taxes, that isn't life changing for a family, and in today's economy, it isn't life changing for One that's playing in the minor league.

He is not giving up a college education. He can still go to school on his own dime. What do they make in minor league baseball? $600-$900/month?

This makes me really wonder how he would have fared in the draft if he would have played at Clemson for a couple of seasons under the coaching of coach See. I'm a believer in, good things come to those with patience, and to those that don't jump at a first offer.

Dang,

Do we expect any more to sign at this point?
Will Barnes be lured away by similar $ or was he already gone?

Barnes is gone. As far as Keating if its true that the Padres will set aside money for him to go to school then that's awesome. I have never heard that but I am far from a MLB draft expert. I will still go with the MLB shouldn't draft kids out of high school but until the NCAA gets off its high horse and let these schools give out full rides then I can't begrudge a kid for choosing to get paid to play instead of paying the other 25-50% of the remaining tuition each year to attend Clemson each year. The bad thing is that schools like Vandy, Virginia and UNC can dip into their large multi billion dollar endowments to give their kids full rides. If it truly is about the student athlete then the NCAA would level this playing field. The number of kids that aren't even considered who are probably dang good at baseball but will never get a chance to better their lives because their family can't afford the other 75% of tuition each year. If baseball really wants to get the youth of urban areas back into baseball then giving full rides is a great start.

Barnes is gone , he wouldn't have much leverage next season.
Unless he really doesn't care about playing Pro
Ball he would be foolish to come back.

500k doesn't go anywhere close to as far as a paid education

Jun 14, 2017, 1:58 PM

And still jeeping the chance to play ball in 3 yrs at the same level.
Not my decision, but I know what I'd do.
Best of luck!!
