Never seen a players average worded like Okey's. Article reads that his average excludes home runs and strike outs. What is that all about?

BABIP is a peculiar stat for a hitter. It is a more common stat for pitchers. Statisticians claim that it can be used to spot seasons that are anomalies. If a pitcher's opponents' BABIP is significantly higher than their batting avg (more than 0.040 higher), the pitcher's ERA that season may be high due to bad luck / bad defense. The pitcher might be a good trade value and a cheap contract compared to their ability. Those pitchers whose BABIPs are low can often be expected to decline in the following season.

Mark Buehrle is a good example of that this season. Despite a 13-8 record and 3.81 ERA with the Blue Jays in 2015, he is still an unsigned free agent. His BABIP went from 0.316 in 2014 to 0.285 in 2015. Statisticians would say that much of Buehrle's success last year was just good luck. When you add in his age and his lack of fast ball velocity (currently 84 mph), they think he's reached the end of his career. Interesting that every major league team appears to be in agreement or someone would have signed him (to the lay person he looks to be worthy of a $15M contract). I'm not sure that I buy BABIP as a stat of much value, but I think it is generally accepted as a helpful data point.

BABIP = {H-HR}/{AB-K-HR+SF}

Need to defend the house this weekend.
Win the series and I believe we can handle NCST and ND.
Got to bring the Bats because it's going to take a lot of runs to beat FSU.

Big home series to kick off the season's closing stretch.

Hopefully the boys are rested and ready to get back to kicking butt mode.

Go Tigers!
