Unfortunately, I think this is a cultural phenomena. Respect is not shown to authority/leaders like it used to be. Media has been calling many coaches by their first name for quite a while. Can you imagine calling Coach Landry, Tom or Coach Lombardi, Vince. I'm fairly traditional, but when a man has worked hard and earned the position of being a head coach at a D1 school or in a professional league, I think he deserves to be called Coach (last name). It has the connotation of lessening their status. You hear the same thing in politics. When you want to belittle your opponent, you say Hillary instead of Secretary Clinton or Marco instead of Senator Rubio.
Probably just me, but I call him Coach Swinney.

Really bad analogy

Hillary did not earn crap, she was appointed. Now she is former and failed presidential nominee Clinton I suppose. It would be more like people referring to President Elect Trump by Trump. He is the president elect.

ny opinion of Hillary is the same, but that has nothing to do with the point.
More accurately, it would be like calling President Trump, Don or Donald.

Well the only person who called Hillary "Hillary" was President Elect Trump and she was secretary. She ruined that for herself. She doesn't deserve to carry that title. This is a football page so keep you liberal agenda out.

Bill, I'm sure that you and I recall that no one ever called

Jan 7, 2017, 11:22 AM

Coach Howard by his first name.

Thus, I think our Coach's younger age and nickname have contributed to the "Dabo" moniker. And I suspect he doesn't mind much, as it's used somewhat affectionately by most all Clemson folks.

Good question. I have thought about it before, but think

Jan 7, 2017, 11:30 AM

about it, some coaches are just so famous, or have a personality that overpowers the coach title. I'm thinking in the past there have been coaches that their first names were used as much as or more than the coach title. Bo, Woody, Bear are just a few that come to mind.

I also hear Jimbo much more than Coach Fisher.***
