At end of game, our D was gassed.

Filling out each position and coaching up our depth is a key to finishing off games.

keeping our offense on the field would make things a tad easier here.

^^^agreed - it's the old ying-and-yang thing. One has to help the other for it to be successful. The O is going to have to man up for future games. Our D should challenge them to get better. I would have thought that practicing against arguably the best D in the nation should have made them better.

Perhaps our D is not as good as advertised... ??

Jimbo used the aggressiveness of the D against us with all the screen and hitting the TE's in the seams, both of which we should do on offense. There were definitely communication issues with pass offs on the back end though and the linebackers looked pretty lost for a bit. Those can/should get cleaned up. Secondary depth is going to be a problem though, it should get a little better as McMichael and Goodrich get more reps but not taking enough DBs in the last few classes is going to cause problems moving forwards. Xaveir McKinney looked really good yesterday and we shouldn't have gotten outworked for him.

In addition to the no calls on holding Jimbo had an outstanding game plan. My hat is off to him. He and his staff put them in a position to hurt us. We are more talented without question and he knew it. Best way to hurt someone? Use their strength against them.
We have things to correct and depth will continue to develop (we substituted guys during meaningful snaps last night). Its early in the season and there is no substitute for experience.
All in all I'm glad we got the W and got out of Dodge.

A&M QB single handedly kept drives alive. Kudos to him.***

Agree 100%, and our secondary issues that also showed vs Furman were validated.

What exactly were the secondary issues against Furman?

Sep 9, 2018, 11:29 AM

They completed 4/9 passes for 46 yards and 16 of those were on their last offensive play against our reserves.

And his receivers made some great catches.***

Why were they so gassed though? We rotate defensive players more than maybe any other defense in the country and they only ran 72 plays. It's not like in the championship game when we ran 99 plays on bama.

It was more than just the total number of plays. I don't have the exact numbers, but look at time of possession in the 2nd half. We had two scoring drives and 3 three and outs and another punt. Both of our scoring drives were pretty fast. We needed a long drive somewhere in there to give the defense a breather. I don't know if we got more than one first down for the entirety of the fourth quarter.

It reminded me of our defense late in 2015

against SC, UNC, and Bama where they would play well in the 1st half and then fall apart in the 2nd half and fail to close out games. Our defense gave up 29, 21, and 31 in the 2nd half of those games, respectively.

No excuse to be gassed, we were rotating 3 deep***

Yep they had to run 30 yards behind them after each play to the NEW line of scrimmage.
